It's a complete suite of development tools that allows you to create anything you want from movies, music, sculpture, paintings, games etc. These can then be shared online to play, look at, listen to or be taken apart (if you allow it) by other creators to build their own content. Naaa ... that's not really the right way of looking at it. I've always likened it to Youtube and recently MM have also likened it to Youtube, so I'd stick with that. You don't really need to use the Youtube aspect of it of course. There's nothing stopping you from just making stuff yourself and not sharing it or accessing the thousands of creations people make. 

You have a levelling system that is cut into categories. For instance, if you mostly make music you'll eventually start to dominate that discipline. The more you dominate that discipline, the higher your score and the more you appear at the top of the list when people search. You can become a celebrity amongst the community just as you would with Youtube. There's even a category simply for finding and sharing quality content/assets/music etc.

That Brütal Legend inspired level was so awesome! Did you notice the shine on Francis' fur when she went into the water? Very cool detail :D

It is also worth to point out, that MediaMolecule used those incredible tools that they wanna give in our hands themselves, to create a story mode. It is a platformer, a platform-puzzle game and a point and click adventure that all are part of the same overarching story. It is not long, but MM already has many, many other smaller games made in dreams that are gonna be ready at release (first person exploration, 3d space shooter, competitive mini game, text adventure, 2d platformers, etc.).

Just think of it as a game development tool that can adjust almost any parameter, from objects to textures, to sound, animation. 

But you can just play what other ppl make without needing to create anything. So its a game version of Youtube (though ppl can make movies, music videos if they want too)

There is no defined genre, or graphics style. Just skim though these 2 vids (though there are some other stuff that is missing):

But is it a game dev tool for professionals? Or anyone can just jump in and make stuff after a few learning steps?
