im not sure, they know what they are doing with mario 2d games. nsmb was one of my favorite titles, and i usually hate ports, but im in for this for switch. more excited for this game than the rest of the lineup for this year tbh.

Did you mean to reply to mine? I mean yeah, it would be a pretty good idea, think about it. The thing I said earlier with E.Gadd's gadgets and unlocking lots of characters with different abilities is already halfway there.

I don't know if it'd have a very big crowd though, since the crowd for Super Mario Odyssey is gigantic in comparison.

Super Mario World got 20 million. If they structured it like that with levels on a world map, but with abilities that unlocked secret exits when you revisited levels, it would be kind of like a Metroidvania, but Mario style. I mean in a way Super Mario World had some light Metroidvania elements. It had levels with branching paths, and you could only explore certain parts if you brought the right powerup with you, or if you had unlocked the yellow/red/blue/green blocks with the appropriate switch castle, or if you had the right color Yoshi, or what have you. It's not too far a step from there to add E. Gadd gadgets and character abilities, and even more secret levels only accessible through secret exits. Mario Bros. 3 even let you carry a ton of items in an inventory and use appropriate items at certain places to get through areas of the map you couldn't normally.

I hated the 3ds nsm game but thought the Wii U one was pretty good (if they rerelease it I’m there baby) but I think if they make a new 2d mario (and I’ll be surprised if they don’t) they should ditch the ‘new’ moniker and change the art style. Make it look more like the 8 and 16 bit era games or come up with something completely new and interesting (I quite liked the visual style of yoshi’s wooly world tbh so it is possible to change the look of mario and come up with something appealing at the same time)...I also would like to see Nintendo continue with the 3d land/world style of game. I quite liked odyssey but to me mario is at its best when it’s a pure platformer.

I'd start with New Super Mario Bros All Stars as a way of filling out Switch's library and leaving that series behind (rather than just porting U and Luigi U), then doing what a lot of people are suggesting here. The basic level design and controls are fine, but a bolder take on the aesthetics, music and selection/variety of content is needed; 'New Super Mario World' would be good, if they go ahead with those changes.

You know, I didn't even think of an NSMB All Stars collection, but THAT might get me to pay $60 for it, if they still did some bonus content. And All Stars on the SNES heralded the end of the Mario Bros. line and made way for Super Mario World, so doing so now would be a good way to simultaneously offer enough content to make people feel like the port was justified, while also sending a message that NSMB is wrapping up so that people won't think the port means even more NSMB is coming, and would get excited about the possibilities. I imagine they probably would call the new one "New Super Mario World", because I doubt they could make a better name, knowing them, and it would get the idea of the direction they're going across, if they decided to draw more inspiration from SMW for the new one, which I think they should.

Complete overhaul, but in 2D. A third NSMB that does to the "New" games, what SMB3 did for original SMB series back in the 80's.

But I'm pretty sure they're just gonna port NSMBU to Switch, and call it NSMB3.
