I hated the 3ds nsm game but thought the Wii U one was pretty good (if they rerelease it I’m there baby) but I think if they make a new 2d mario (and I’ll be surprised if they don’t) they should ditch the ‘new’ moniker and change the art style. Make it look more like the 8 and 16 bit era games or come up with something completely new and interesting (I quite liked the visual style of yoshi’s wooly world tbh so it is possible to change the look of mario and come up with something appealing at the same time)...I also would like to see Nintendo continue with the 3d land/world style of game. I quite liked odyssey but to me mario is at its best when it’s a pure platformer.
