Forums - Gaming Discussion - SIE Q1 2018 (Apr-June): 3.2m PS4s shipped (down vs Q1 2017@3.3m) / FY18 forecast increased to 17m

PS4 is still ahead of the PS2 at this point in their life cycles..... Wonder if it can keep that up until the PS5 launch?

So why are Microsoft so aggressive then? It might not be crazy that Sony keep it high for insane profits but its crazy that they're able to get such high sales at that price. The power of awesome software.

What do you mean by aggressive? As in MS cut there price alot or dont cut there price alot?

Great Quarter for PlayStation! The rest of the company remains stagnant or in decline.

They need to get their other devices and entertainment segments into the PlayStation ecosystem ASAP, to turn around sales, start making profits, and increase the value and importance of their OS and Store. Smartphones continue to decrease while they continue to tack on the $5+ Billion in losses they have obtained since killing Vita and focusing half assed efforts on Xperia. They are now forecasting 9 Million Xperias sold for the year, while losses double to 30bln Yen. Their other Google charity program, the display and sound segment is forecasting sales to decrease another million units this year, while profits remain flat (highly unlikely, expect them to fall). There are no words for the level of incompetence going on at the top, and the rest of the divisions outside of PlayStation. They could be succeeding in every division if they would just work as a team, and focus on improving Sony. No more internal battles, no more divisions using competitors software and storefronts. Just one Sony working to deliver the best Sony expereince possible.

THINGS TO NOTE

-The march towards digital continues with full game sales rising from 39% in Q1 2017 to 43% in Q1 2018. Not long before we reach 50%, should be there by the time PS5 launches.

-Full game software sale were up to 40.6 Million from 38.6 Million in Q1 last year.

-PS+ membership fell from 34.2 Million in March to 33.9 in June.

Yeah... if Only Sony put the PS4's OS on a cell phone. With its complete and utter lack of app library, and the angle the media would push about Sony once again unnecessarily pushing their own proprietary OS, I'm sure units would FLY off the shelves! Better yet, let's have Sony increase the performance of their TVs (and thus decrease profit margin/increase price) so that they can run a comparatively bloated PS4 OS, but not actually play PS4 games, while abandoning a TV OS that already has most, if not all of the apps and non-PS4 game features that the PS4 has.

Sony would be better off pulling out of the cell phone market and tv market altogether rather than light money on fire implementing your ideas.

Edit: You want Sony to increase profits? Maybe they should notice the writing on the wall and put PSVR out to pasture. The market is obviously not there for it, and we're already seeing a year on year decrease in sales despite it only being its second full year of sales, and promotions that saw its price cut in half.

No ps4 is not under tracked, those are shipped numbers.

1.6 million on the shelves? Is that even possible?

Very very possible, as others have said it should even be higher. I do suspect sony is limiting the amount of consoles its shipping out though. Forwhatever reason. probably trying to avoid what happened before. Or maybe they are clearing the channels for  revised SKU.

Sony really underestimated the PS4 this year, perhaps underestimating GoW is a factor in that. They might even have to increase the forecast again, but I'm content with 17m if it sticks.

Anyone that is aware of what sony has done all of this gen would have seen that 16M previous forcast for exactly what it was. Sony always seems to undersell their expectations maybe just only so they can come back and outperform them. Or they are opting to err on the side of caution. Either way there was no way they would only ship 16M consoles.

Just watch as the shipment total increases every other quater until the end of the FY.

So for the last quater was it 3.2m ps4 vs 1.8m switch? Insane ps4 sells so well without a price cut. Surely a big price cut this holiday or will Sony go with another temporary holiday promotion? They certainly have the software to keep sales high at its current price but its just crazy to think they're not dropping the price further.

Unfortunately seeing things like this makes me feel there is very little chance of us seeing a price cut this year. Like as is there is absolutely no business sense in dropping the price. That literally would be like leaving free money on th table. They are already shipping more than twice the number of their biggest rival, and 3 times the nimber of their direct rival.

Selling on par this year with what they managed last year. Are well on track to hit 90M sales this year. Which would mean they had another at least 17M console year.

Outside a holiday prmotion, why would they drop the price? Charity?

I actually think thats a bad idea.

I believe an even more radical approach is better. They need to downsize every part of their company, such that every individual part is profitable. They cannot and should never resort to binding other less successful divisions to a more popular one.

Ther are companys (looking at you onePlus) that do well and are on their own smaller than sony. The Oneplus business model is proof that sony should be able to turn their smartphone business around but they just keep making teh wrong design choices all while having great internal hardware.

Its hightime sony actually invested intheir own TV tech. Be it Oled or MLED. Whatever, they dropped the ball when they opted to just aquire panels from other companies.

Yes, that is very normal, its actually quite a bit lower than previous quarters.

Sony announced sell through of 73.6m and shipments of 76.5m at the end of 2017, a difference of 2.9 million.

That's because of the holidays. It's normally lower than 2-3M.

I think it will go up either on revision or at Year End.

Hey slow down, to early to say PS4 have a chance of outselling Switch this year.

Its not crazy its buisness. If people are already buying your product than why do they need to price cut? HW is already hard to profit on, Sony dont need to make it harder for themselfs. Rake in what you can get id say.

Nintendo rarely drop there prices aswell. If its hot its hot.

I don't remember a relevant console that haven't had pricecuts.

PS1 sold 100M and had a lot of them. PS2 sold 160M and had them. PS3/X360/Wii all sold over 80M and had them. PS4/X1 had them. I think all HH from Nintendo and Sony also had.

First time PS+ dropped this gen, and also probably first time that around the Q report they aren't near 50% attach ratio.

Perhaps that is due to the Q1 and Q2 having more great single player (like GOW and Detroit) than Multiplayer, perhaps at year end we get a boom of PS+... Some can say this is due to the backlash of the crossplay =p

My guess it a lot of those PS Plus subs were 3 month tryouts bought at Xmas. Luckily, it looks like most stuck around, since it only dropped by ~300K.

Also, I expect a ~$50 price cut this year. They are definitely not dropping to $199, though, except for Black Friday.

Thats beside the point, he thought 1.6m was a high number for the shipped vs sold, its not.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

With the quiet Q3, I can't see Sony not upping its target to 18 or 19 million but with the out performance of GOW, MLB the Show and Detroit, I can see Spiderman moving the needle more than they forecast.

I hope Sony doesn't underestimate demand this holiday season again.  To think how many more they could have sold during last black Friday had they not been sold out everywhere.

I think if they have a $199 bundle again this year - with choice of Spider-Man, Red Dead, God of War, etc. - they are going to sell a ton of PS4's and may even surpass their newly raised forecast.

Well, PS+ have been higher every Q. Sure it could be 3 months on Holiday, but still is the first drop. But I think on Q4 we shall be over 40M PS+
