Does that mean creating/purchasing new studios to increase 1st party content or will it be investing more into things like timed exclusives & exclusive marketing/bundles?

Likely neither and moreso GaaS and Gamepass stuff or even investment in XB2.

But the leaked E3 thing did suggest a few exclusive marketing stuff.

Makes sense, Gamepass has alot of potential if handled correctly.

iirc marketing is part of another budget so this money is going into the gaming division so hopefully more studios and games. Especially with gamepass now a thing MS will need to increase their output to keep people subbed.

I wonder if they will pay third parties to put their games in Gamepass.  Seems like a reasonable idea to me.  They're certainly not going to get Call of Duty at launch.  But, they may be able to get Assassins Creed after a year.

It was rumored that Borderlands 3 will be on Gamepass day 1, that would definitely be a step in the right direction.

That would be huge.  So huge that I doubt it will actually happen.  I certainly hope I'm wrong though.

I am sure there is increased spending on 1st party games. Phil promiawd there would be more a d it would be very hard d to walk back so i am sure this is part of that. Or could this also be R&D into the next Xbox?

I am not surprised one bit. Phil clearly stated it takes time. After the X investment all focus can now easily shift to games. Common sense really.

They’ve been telling this since the start of the gen.

So more online services and no games.let the hype begin for next gen online services.

One would assume that hardware and software investment would be separate entities.
I.E. You don't wait for one to do the other.

For example... Microsoft would already be planning and building the Xbox 4 and making investments towards that end, these things do take years.

Haven't they been investing for years already ? But I am not sure where the money is spent

They have made bold claims before like... They were investing $1+ billion dollars on new games.

The issue is... Some games may never get past the concept phase.
And sometimes Microsoft may have invested hundreds of millions in game development which in the end resulted in nothing. (Fable and Scalebound being cancelled despite significant dev time for instance.)

I don't think it's all that important for Microsoft to pump out a sheer volume of games... But it is important to have some massive heavy hitters to do the leg work.
Halo 3 literally shifted Xbox 360 consoles for instance and made the Xbox the talk of the town for years.

Games like Halo 5, Gears of War 4 just haven't provided the goods this generation and Microsoft needs something new, Sea of Thieves certainly fell short... Halo Wars 2 was niche. There just hasn't been any must-haves.

Sea of Thieves fell short? The game is the second best selling of March and eighth best seller YTD according to NPD. There isn't any must haves? Did you forget about Forza Horizon 3?

But they actually did it this time around.
