Here is the week 13 update in terms of the two big consoles in Japan's path to be able to reach the commonly stated (in these sales threads) estimates for 2018 sales (2 mil for PS4, 4 mil for Switch) .

  TWS GD YTD AWN (Change)
PS4 25,325 -7,314 719,753 32,826 (+187)
Switch 44,033 -39,963 684,162 85,021 (+1025)

TWS - This week's sales
GD - Goal differential, the difference between the average week needed from last week compared to this week's sales
YTD - Units sold in 2018 so far including this week's sales
AWN - Average weekly sales needed to reach the estimate for the console.

Marginal increase for PS4 and marginal decrease in Switch sales this week. Only a couple weeks from Labo, so will be interesting to see if the Switch gets closer to its AWN for its release. Will Sony have more stock in Japan now for the new fiscal year? Might see some interesting changes in the upcoming few weeks..

I’m pretty sure PS4 hasn’t really had any stock issues for the past few weeks in Japan now

The Slim has been sold out on Amazon for about 2-3 weeks now. They just got a shipment in on the 1st and now they're already down to 1 unit left until restock:

MHW has been way bigger than Sony ever expected which led to some shortages.

Pretty good numbers for Far Cry 5, being able to debut at #2.

I imagine they were waiting until this new fiscal year to restock since they had already well-surpassed their shareholder quota/estimate. I could be wrong though. If it's still at 20-25k in the next few weeks then it was likely just an Amazon only issue, similar to what happened on US Amazon for a little while last month.

The PS4 was out of stock for a few weeks after MHW launch, but judging by anecdotal evidence on PS4 stock situation in stores, most of the issues seem to have been sorted out. Amazon isn’t the end all be all for the stock situation, iirc Switch was out of stock on Amazon a month or two ago but it didn’t have any actual stock issues

Possibly. As I said I may be wrong. Another 'anecdotal' evidence is that I frequently use Yahoo Auctions Japan, Rakuten, and other Japanese shopping websites. I frequently see the PS4 and PS4 pro for selling for higher than its MSRP. This does not normally happen unless there is a stock shortage.

For example. a PS4 pro sold for 52,000 yen after 144 bids.

EDIT: And here's a regular PS4 still with 2 days of bidding left at 32,000 yen:

Yeah, honestly seems like it could go either way. We’ll just have to see how it does over the next few weeks I guess
