Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why was GTA 4 universally overrated?

Shhh only Zelda games are overrated.

no a lot more than zelda is overrated. Uncharted is a great example. almost every console flagship is, Halo was generally not overrated except  4 and 5 were not exactly great. especially 5 that game was actually mediocre.  at least thats my opinion

It was a technical marvel, game mechanics felt great, and story/voice acting was exceptional.

The only thing really wrong with the game is the campaign kinda sucks. If they just made some tweaks it could be a lot more enjoyable though, like mission checkpoints would make it less tedious (which was added in DLC expansions).

you must have not drove a car in GTA IV if you think the game mechanics were great.

I'm sort of half and half with GTAIV... I love the physics, absolutely top notch for the time, really fun to plow into a crowd of people and watch them fall over, hit the car, splatter on the bonnet, try and hold onto the handles and stuff, really satisfying if not a little sadistic, lol, also I quite enjoyed the multiplayer, even something as simple as TDM in the airport was such a blast, played it so much back in the day! HOWEVER, the game itself was rather bland, there wasn't that much to do aside from FUCKING BOWLING FUCK YOU ROMAN I DO NOT WANT TO GO BOWLING! and stuff like that... although getting drunk and fighting was fun, one punch to the head would knock you down for a while, lol. The story and the characters were sort of hit and miss, but holy shit did I love Little Jacob, even if I had NO IDEA what he was saying more than half the time, lol.

tl;dr I quite enjoyed the game, but wouldn't say it was one of the best games ever like some people have said in the past, lol. Some stuff worked, some didn't. Mix IV and V together in a new location and we'd have a perfect GTA game in my opinion.

I do agree it's overrated however, i don't think it's a bad game. the driving was annoying, the color palette was awful, and it removed a lot of good features from previous titles which i found odd. it was just an ok game to me.

It was okay, I liked that car felt it had weight. When you hit pedestrians the impact along with the physics felt pretty good.

However the driving camera never felt quite right and I recall it being kind of slippery. But like most GTA games the problem is you often spent too much time driving around.

Because 5 and San Andreas have it beat in basically every way

Actually, this makes me look at it from a different angle. Are you asking why it didn't deserve the scores, or why it was rated so high in the first place?

well that was my initial question. I mean I liked GTA 4. but it was the worst one out of vice city san andreas and 5. in my completely honest opinion

it just didn't seem very polished around the edges and the phone mechanic was just really really annoying

So, the question is why it got those scores in the first place?

Just like FF7, I don't get how GTA4 can be considered overrated when you have more people calling it overrated than defending it.

Because most people thought GTAIV was overrated, and the people who think FF7 is overrated are just salty 6&9 fans.
