  • PS4 has now cumulatively sold through more than 53.4*2 million units globally as of January 1, 2017.

PlayStation 4 ended 2016 with an installed base of 53 million compared to Xbox One’s 27.6 million.

they were just giving an estimate  on install base, and not exact sell through numbers like they do in this article.

No, they are both literally the same thing.

Why would the Switch & XBO numbers be specific but the PS4 number be an estimate?

Please just stop the Switch is overtracked witch hunt, its just making you look more and more silly as time goes on.

You are heading towards a cliff at high speed with this line of argumentation. Be careful that you don't fall off.

it's obvious they weren't using exact numbers, if they say said 53.1 million i would agree, but saying a install base of 53 million, it's obvious they weren't trying  to give exact numbers.

They are all estimates. This their annual market insight report they release. Here is the proper link to this year report.

Which is like the report I highlighted they were off by Sony own internal estimates.

you want proof .

https://technology.ihs.com/600640/games-console-market-2017-nintendo-drives-market-to-18-per-cent-growthConsumer spending in 2017 across Sony devices including PS4, PS3 and PS Vita took 53 per cent share of the total market, down from 57 per cent in 2016.

Spending on PS4 consoles alone represented 51 per cent share of the market as Sony delivered successfully on its dual product strategy of PS4 and PS4 Pro and ended the year with an installed base of over 73 million.

So despite knowing ps4 is at 73.6 million, they used the 73 million number.

Did they state last year over? They/you can try that excuse this year but last year doesn't say over this amount.

In this article for the 53 million figure: https://technology.ihs.com/590493/sony-dominates-2016-console-market-with-57-share-of-world-market-value

They don't use the word "over" though.

"PlayStation 4 ended 2016 with an installed base of 53 million"

In comparison to;

"PS4 and PS4 Pro and ended the year with an installed base of over 73 million"

Because Quickrick said so!!!

OK for everyone saying those numbers are wrong because of the 53 million number, compared to the 53.4 million number, You guys do realize that the 53 million number came out 2 months after sony announced the 53.4 million number, that like 100% proof they weren't being precise with the numbers they were using. unlike the switch where they make it clear IHS Markit reports 12.8 million Switch units were sold over the course of the year, but keep using the straw man argument.

What reason does an analyst firm have to make itself look less competent in a deliberate manner?

So someone can use that fact a year later to prove their point.
