Forums - Microsoft - Polygon: Microsoft's Current Dilemma With Games

Another article essentially about the same thing. But I thought it was more interesting since they used VGChartz as a source :P.

They won't dare buy EA. Sony would buy out take 2 or get the rights to future rockstar titles.

Take Two has like a 13~ billion dollar market cap, Sony's is like $60 billion tops? Can Sony really afford to throw that kind of moolah around willy nilly in response to competitive pressure?

Microsoft has 130~ billion in it's war chest to spend on whatever it wants. And has a market cap of $700~ billion which could reach $1 trillion by 2021.

Microsoft could literally buy Sony, Take Two and EA.

Sony's assets alone is worth more than $150b, not a chance that they could buy Sony. They could buy up all the stocks for a ludicrous amount of money, but that wouldn't be buying it entirely.

Well not with there straight out cash. I am sure if they really wanted to they could easily make room for the Purchase by simply selling and trading.

They wont though because is buying Sony worth it? Will they make $150b back any time soon just to stop there competition? MS make money off Sony since they partner up with PCs etc. And it wouldnt help MS tackle there real competitor Apple by using all there cash on a company that isnt garenteed or stable to profit yearly.

Yeah and a big thing is tax from buying anything. Disney(rev 55bn) buying Fox (rev 13bn) for 55bn is already pretty huge, I think MS(rev 89bn) buying Sony(rev 69bn) would be quite a bigger deal. I think Sony is simply too big.

I would really prefer if steam remains free from the other big names.
most people that have a gameing pc, run steam anyways, weither its called windows store, and shipped inside windows or not.

I could see MS wrecking steam, not long after they got it.

How would MS wreck Steam? They didn't wreck Minecraft when they brought them, they actually did wonders for Minecraft bringing in Cross Play and bringing it to other consoles like Nintendo. If anything it will convince MS to drop there Windows Store and use Steam as there main weapons against there main Competitors like Apple.

Windows and Steam is the perfect combo for each other, having full control can grant benefits. It would be the best decision to move Windows.

You see the benefits as a Microsoft fan, but I doubt even Gabe Newell would be so happy with Microsoft touching his product. That...and well..Microsoft should never be trusted to be a monopoly anywhere. That would mean they have a monopoly over not over the OS market, but the PC gaming market. Sony and Nintendo would be the last true bastion of traditional gaming as we knew it. Microsoft no real direction for anything, which is why they are having an exclusives problem. Wanting to get their subscriptions and application based ventures out there isnt enough. Buying EA would be almost as bad because this would prove just how desperate they would have to be just to compete. The primary way Microsoft has been able to fight back against Sony was to buy other peoples games. This sets a very bad and low standard for how one competes if true. Hopefully its not and Microsoft proves themselves to gamers, but man...theres been too much disappointment. I hope they just buy a fleet of devs, restructure and go after Sony next gen.

Would be great. Microsoft acquiring EA, both annihilate each other in a huge reaction of concentrated Microtransactionmatter and Xbox has no gaemz implosion, sending shockwaves throughout the world of videogaming. But then, after the dust has settled, a wonderful bluish sky can be seen and a chance for a new golden age...

Remember me to ignore you for any future financial discussions.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

They wouldn't for other reasons beyond money, such as the Japanese Government. Just looking at EA's earnings, however, this entire discussion has just gone into silly overdrive. It's not happening. Like I said, I can see Microsoft doing something with the PUBG team, but nothing beyond.

I agree, even if the offer was on the table, MS wont buy them. PUBG is a high possibility.

Not so much for MS fans. Its more to win over the Computer market since Apple and MS compete head to head in that industry. No company is good when in a monopoly, however MS owning Steam wont cause a monopoly, it actually pushes Apple to start driving games themselves and there are plenty of PC game stores not just Steam and Live.

Sony and Nintendo will cross the same path very soon, Sony has already started with there online services while Nintendo has just started.

You say MS has no real direction? Well I have to disagree. MS know where the industry is heading. Many thought the Minecraft deal was a rip-off yet Minecraft has sold heaps more due to MS owning them, thanks for them keeping the game alive and well supported. They also invested Billions into the Azure Cloud (Cant remember the amount however I know it was a insane amount) and Cloud has been raking them a fortune year on year. MS know there stuff and its one of the reasons there one of the riches companies in the world.

You need to take into account that Xbox lacked exclusives in 2017 is most likely due to these scenarios. With there focus on the X and these rumours of them acquiring a huge studio/corp, clearly there investments lately have been more about the future than the present. Now that the X is a good success for them, they are going in all guns blazing trying to get exclusives by purchasing a major studio.

Also Sony and Nintendo buy devs all the time. Not sure why you claim MS. Don't forget Sony and there Street Fighter 5 deal being one of the biggest examples. If you think MS are bad due to that than the same can be said to Sony just as much. Naughty Dog, Sony's best studio was brought out not created by Sony. They all start somewhere.

Personally I think the EA deal isn't that great. I would much rather see MS purchase Capcon or Komani, not only will that give a wealth of Exclusives to MS but also increase there presence in Japan etc. Unlikely to happen due to the Japanese rulings however that's a much bigger thing than EA who's Reputation is tarnished.

Valve and Gabe Newell don't make games anymore and rarely, and personally with the Valve we have today, I am sure Gabe wants to retire and a good sum of money will only tempt him since his passion for gaming has decreased over the years. Steam is also on Windows and it would definitely have MS interested. This is also unlikely to happen but you never know. Steam under MS will mean Steam is safe from collapsing any time soon and being brought out by giants like Apple etc.

I would love for them to buy out Valve just to see the insanity that would follow.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

Please anyone but Valve. Literally anyone.

Be careful of what you wish for. Más vale mal conocido que bueno por conocer.

You know it deserves the GOTY.
