Say what you want but they crossed the point of unverified to posting anything and claiming unverified just to win clicks a long time ago. There is no reason to defend several of the new modus operandi from journalists nowadays.

About more serious problems, not sure where you are from, but Brazil have a lot of issues more important than to know "Trump throwed a lot of food for the japanase fish in an unrespectfull manner"... whish was also fake, because the PM of Japan done it seconds earlier and he just mimicked... that didn't stop a lot of major media outlets from reporting it.

At the same time we have an ex-president being under judgement for scandals of corrupution that cross the multibillion barrier.

Thanks for the link.

When it comes to unverified stories, there's not much they can do aside from trying to investigate on their own. But even if they come up short, it's their duty to report it if they consider it significant. (Or profitable, sadly.) What they can do however is verify the identity of the anonymous source. If the source claims they have information from the White House, they verify that this is a person with access to this type of information in the White House before running the story. This is something people in general don't understand.
When Comey's memo's first leaked, several news outlets reported that they independently verified the existence of the memos, but that they had not read it themselves. In other words, they spoke to someone who proved themselves to be an associate of Comey who would have access to such information. In spite of that, and in spite of people like myself explaining this to people, they kept insisting that it was fake news. People's understanding of this processes has become more warped than ever with the President calling everything he doesn't like fake news. It's at the point where even those who do understand the process contribute to this problem, as more than half of people according to a study admit to lying about something being fake news, because it portrays their party in a negative light, even though they believe the story is accurate.
You don't combat misinformation with more misinformation, and the fake news hysteria has gotten far out of hand.

I agree one shouldn't fight fake news with more fake news. And most of these so called "studies" are close to being fake studies on very bad premises and false corelation (won't really put the time to investigate it further anyway).

I just wanted to point out that your initial premise of the "serious and credible" work of the journalists aren't like that anymore for a long time.

My initial comment was that journalists (at least the ones we're talking about for major stories) can't just print any story they want without verifying their credibility. That's where verifying the identity of the source comes in. Which is why the reports on the leaked Comey documents were credible even before Comey confirmed it himself, etc.

"Serious and credible journalism" in general is a much broader subject, and they've been untrustworthy in this regard for decades now as far as I'm concerned. A very important story can get interrupted by the 'breaking news' that a Kardashian is pregnant. (That actually happened.)

Still if you look enough you'll be surprised at how much they really print about any story. Or do you think a major portal putting how much disrespectfull Trump was feeding the japanese fish had a lot of verification for credibility?

You may not believe but just recently some major outlet in Brazil remembered to create a "fact check" department, while the major broadcast TV was weekly making reports of OVNI and abduction.

How they spin stories has never been surprising to me. That's why I always try to fact check with multiple sources, focus on the facts or direct quotes if they are present, and draw my own conclusions rather than listen to what they think I should be thinking, etc. And minor stories are more likely to slip through the cracks more easily than issues of national security, etc. And serious publications tend to redact stories with updated information if they're found to have inaccuracies, etc.

Just curious, but which major portals are you referring to in this case of the fish feeding?

In Brazil it have been on Globo (major outlet here) but I don't remember the one from USA.

https://noticias.uol.com.br/ultimas-noticias/afp/2017/11/06/trump-perde-a-paciencia-com-as-carpas-e-internautas-vao-ao-delirio.htm

https://g1.globo.com/mundo/noticia/trump-perde-a-paciencia-com-as-carpas-e-internautas-vao-ao-delirio.ghtml

http://internacional.estadao.com.br/blogs/radar-global/trump-perde-a-paciencia-ao-alimentar-carpas-japonesas-e-viraliza-na-web/

These three are among the major medias in the country. It is totally obnoxious in Brazil how the media hate for Trump and Republicans have made they post anything that can harm the image of Trump. Also they like to bash Temer who became president after Dilma got impeached.

The media have aligned so much with the left wing that in Brazil is quite hard to do the filtering (even more because they will repost the news of other portals if they align with their directives).

But I do agree with you that you have to read the news in a whole and extract what is factual and what is the spin. This is why I said that currently fake news isn't exactly about inventing news but on the severe spin done on anything to make it fit a narrative that may not even be related to the topic. And of course it happens from righ aligned media and left as well, just that nowadays the left have more representation so they will have more media spins on their favour.

You see what he's done...his blind followers already believe everything is fake news, when he actually is the one telling fake stories every day of the week. Same tactics that worked for Hitler and his "Lügenpresse". I'm sure the rumours are true that Trump read a book about Hitler, before coming to power. He's sure acting more and more like a dictator himself day by day.

You are completely unaware that Obama has put more Journalists in prison than any other President aren't you! Keep drinking that Liberal Kool-Aid though! And btw. Claiming Trump is anywhere near Hitler is disgusting! That just shows how brainwashed you are. What has he done that is equivalent to MILLIONS of Jews murdered! That's ignorant man!

I’m talking about his methods, that he’s disgustingly copying, fear mongering, centralisation of power, promising to make your country first and give it its honour back, calling the established press liars...not about the person itself. You’re the sheep, just like the Germans were back then, if you don’t notice it.

Trump is reducing you guys in distraught ...

Losing your minds over fake news like Trump said, getting bent out of shape and made you all eat your own words from time to time all of which is ironic ...

Is this how you really want to go down, being trolled by Trump ?

You're sadly overestimating Trump's intelligence and slyness, and obviously your own. No one is going down instead of Trump, just wait and see.

Ironic since you and others are going down in flames by comparing him to Hitler LEL ... (I'm not rating Trump's intellect or cunning but damn are you guys getting reaching over Trump)

Why is Hitler above comparison?
