If this happens, then this will be the first Sony home console I skip.

Highly unlikely and wouldn't be wise either. 1. We already see Kinect fail as a forced peripherial. 2. Price. 3. Not everybody likes or can cope with VR.
VR will very likely be an option from the start though and hopefully everything will be fully backwards compatible.
I think that the PS5 will be VR capable but it will be primarily designed for and used with a TV. VR is still in it's infancy. It won't replace TVs in gaming until it becomes like SAO where you lay in a bed while in a sleep-like state with the headset on ya, playing the game like you're in it.

If it was, that would be a perfect reason for many, myself included, NOT to ever buy it.
Many people aren't interested in gimmicks. They just want to sit down and play some fuckin' games.

I also think the controllers will be detachable hybrid between motion and if even simply two seperate "cons" I think, ever since the Wiimote and nunchuck, this is the best and most relaxing way to play games. I think, hopefully at least, they will be able to keep the headset costs down to near 99 quid if not spot on that number and the barrier to entry for VR will be much, much lower. I think the console will be molded around the VR aspect with software things like VR browser support (for easier porn access without having to blatently advertise it), a dedicated VR dashboard/xmb and perhaps the return of PS home in VR fashion. If not Sony will truly be missing on on the great opertunity they have here to grasp a firm hold (something they are already doing) into the VR market. Perhaps we will see a mad boost on PS5's release, after having the pleasure of playing 32 VR games since mid december, this is no gimmick, this is the true way to play games. Thank god for VR and VR porn. |
I could see VR headsets basically beeing the "new tvs". So there might be some cheap one for 99 dollar (maybe not wireless and just fullHD res), and there will be some 8k/16k with HDR, beatifull colors for up to 10k+. I dont think the "on device fit all" we still be a thing in the future. I could even See the PS5 to work with multiple VR headsets from different manufactures, pretty much like the PS4 works with all kind of TV models. Sony will likely be more interested in selling software then hardware

How can this be better? In VR the "screen" is obviously still much bigger, everything as a real 3D scale. How can "watching stuff through a window" compete with that?
And you could basically just create a virtual cinema with a screen as big as you want.

You purchase the television you want with the contrast ratio, refresh rate, and resolution you want while not having the burden of a VR set on your head while having full view of everything without having to turn your head in a limited field of view. How is that NOT better?

Ah I see. I know some people that were thinking the same. They changed their mind pretty quickly after expierincing vr for the first time.
50 years backs you would most likely refuse to try those new "telivision" and "movies" because your "fine" with your books and "what you want". Technology will gladly always advance so, some people just need longer to adept. No problem. Even if you refuse to play it, you could still use a PS4 for flat games, just dont buy the ps5 in that case ;) |
I tried the same arguments on him a while back. No chance. We'll talk again, that much is sure.

you can already do that with current VR

People STILL calling VR a gimmick sure have to try it yet.

Easy:
1. We talk about future VR headset. FOV wont be limited. It will just look like reality
2. Modern VR headsets will have the same best contrast ratio, refresh rates, resolution like TVs
3. VR headsets wont be "clunky" anymore (they arnt even extremly clunky currenlty). It will still be much easier to use them and you likely wont even/barely notice them
4. You can still have a full view of everything
hopes that helps.
