What number should represent average on a ten point scale?

It depends for me. I rate 2d side scrollers completely different from say an rpg game or first person shooter. I might give a good 2d side scroller game a 9 because it’s a great game in its genre. I might give COD an 8. Do I think the 2d side scroller is a better game than COD, of course not. But that COD may not be my favorite of numerous great first person shooters and other reasons etc.

6 or 5.5, because most reviewers rate on a 1-10 scale.

If it were a 0-10 scale, then 5.

5 for me as well, should be used more frequently, like, a lot more.

From 0 to 10, the middle number, 5, should be given for an average game. But, for this kind of thing to work, all games must be judged on the same scale. In other words, if crappy indy games can get a 5, then even a terrible AAA blockbuster will have to get a 9 or 10. So, we can't have any more of the "its good for what it is, so its gets a 7".

Why the indie game should be automatically be docked numbers? Sure, a crappy indie game should get a 0, but the terrible AAA game should also get a 0. Big budget doesn't magically make a better game. And actually many AAA-stuff is boring and uninventive. A boring game shouldn't get good scores, because a cutscene looked pretty or so.

1. One of the worst games of all time (0-29)
2. Terrible (30-39)
3. Bad (40-49)
4. Mmmm, nope, try to avoid it, unless you're a fan and is a super niche game that you like (Pokemon Dungeon?) (50-64)
5. Average (65-70)
6. Ok (71-75)
7. Good (76-84)
8. Very Good (85-94)
9. Excellent (95-99)
10. No Game Should be Here, but since you have to use it, then games that change everything or all time classics could be here. (OoT?)

If you put an entry with no game should be here, you really have a 0-9 scale. And then people like you say: as a 9 is perfect nobody ever should use it and you get a 0-8 scale. And repeat.

Not really. 10/10 is 100%. 9/10 is not 100%, so saying that 90% is perfect makes no sense.

It's the same logic as putting an 11 on amps (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Up_to_eleven ). If you change the scale, that doesn't really change anything, only redistributes the entry on the new scale. If you say 10 i snot used, you really have a 0-9 scale, which means 9 is 100%.

That 11 on the amps was a Spinal Tap joke, it wasn't meant to be taken seriously.

To all those who voted 5....So if you write a test in school and you get half the questions wrong, you should still get a C in your opinion?!

I prefer the "grade" rating with average being C- and C. This would translate to a 6.7 to 7.5.
