Forums - Movies & TV - The Fans Have Spoken, Last Jedi Drops A Massive 68%

I actually don't think Disney buys critics.

The Marvel films ARE solid for what they are trying to be. Guardians 2, Dr. Strange are legit good films for what they are trying to be. So are Force Awakens and Last Jedi.

Movie critics are not nerds. They don't give a shit if Thanos has the right back story or any of that stuff. They don't care about Snoke's back story.

You have to be invested in these franchises to a hardcore degree to really care about the decision making in them that doesn't go the way you want.

If the fans have spoken the fans must really love The Last Jedi.

Also I love how when critics and audiences don't see eye to eye it's that the critics are biased/bought out. Not that different people have different reactions to art.

Critics aren't perfect but I'll trust them anyday over the people who liked Transformers 4, and I'm glad I trusted them for this movie.

Don' t you agree that critics can be wrong about a film? Haven't you noticed that critics and regular people have very different opinions on films in general? Like the comedy, sci-fi and horror genres. Critics really like to shit all over those in general while some people like 'em. It's possible that the critics are wrong about this movie.

Shh. Critics are to be worshiped. We are to obey when they tell us what is good or bad.

All hail the great critics. Their opinion is all that matters.

Of course they can and they have been wrong about some great films in the past, they are only humans, however I would argue they are usually way more right than wrong and I don't think they failed in the judgement of this movie at all. Critics do not hate comedies, sci-fi and horror movies that's nothing more than a myth, every year there are movies of those genres very well received by them and yes I'm aware critics and general public do have their differeces, but that's obvious, the general public is for the most part like most people in this thread, clueless about cinema and with a very uneducated taste, while critics are usually very into cinema, they have spent their lifes watching all kinds of movies from all ages and many times they have studied cinema or even work on it, so of course there is gonna be a differece of opinion between those 2 kind of profile.

I disagree. They tend to give dramas or films that promote pc, critical acclaim while rarely giving any film from those genre a passing grade. These critics are no different than the guys behind the art or fashion scenes. They live within an echo chamber and they value their own opinions too much. They might as well live on another world with out of touch they are with the consumers on those products.

Critics are usually right. They just see far more movies and understand things like character development, three act structure, cinematography, etc. in a way a general movie goer doesn't.

And the top money making films normally are well received by critics. Titanic was, Star Wars was, E.T. was, The Dark Knight was, most of the Marvel films are.

There is crap like the Transformers movies that do well with bad reviews, but they're actually the minority not the majority. There's more to cinema than Transformers and Adam Sandler and superhero films though.

Get out, the babadook, it follows, cabin in the woods, the Witch, the conjuring 1+2, the guest, it, just to name a few recent examples that have all got good reviews. The thing with the horror genre is that it tends to be  dominated by low budget cash grabs. When genuinly good horror films are made they tend to be well reviewed.

Have we forgotten that people wanted to shut down rotten tomatoes because they give bad DC films bad scores? Maybe the general audiences value the opinions of critics too much.

The rest is kinda nonsense. Lots of movies in other genres have gotten positive reviews. Just because the critics disliked Texas Chainsaw 3D doesn't mean The Witch, The Conjuring 2, Lights Out, Don't Breathe, It Follows, It Comes at Night, Annabelle Creation, The Shallows, and Ouija Origin of Evil didn't get high praise. All horror movies from the past 2 years. Just because a movie gets good reviews doesn't mean it's a good movie and just because a movie gets bad reviews doesn't mean it's a bad movie, but there's no great conspiracy here.

I liked it. Plan to buy the Blu-ray version when it comes out. I was 5 years old when episode 4 originally came out.

Critics generally get things right. There's very few critically panned films that over the long haul are remembered as being great.

I think that's more of a case of people that don't  like seeing negative opinions of something they like.

I wasn't suggesting that there's a conspiracy or anything but that there's a group of who don't break off from what others say in their group. Human nature.

At this point too if Disney is going to release a new Star Wars movie per year they are also going to have to live with the fact that whether fans like the movie or not they're only going to see it once at the theater.

No "normal" person is seeing Star Wars in the theater 2-3 times ... TFA got that boost because it was the first Star Wars in 10 years and the first one in the vein of the more popular original trilogy in 30+ years. You can't expect people to spend $30+ per person going to Star Wars yearly.

It's going to become a "see it once, then go see something else like Jumanji" type thing from here on out.
