Critics are usually right. They just see far more movies and understand things like character development, three act structure, cinematography, etc. in a way a general movie goer doesn't.
And the top money making films normally are well received by critics. Titanic was, Star Wars was, E.T. was, The Dark Knight was, most of the Marvel films are.
There is crap like the Transformers movies that do well with bad reviews, but they're actually the minority not the majority. There's more to cinema than Transformers and Adam Sandler and superhero films though.
