Switch is killing it.

#20 PS4 ($283)
#26 XB1 ($199)

I'm surprised to see PS4 outselling XB1 in the US despite being $84 more expensive (considering how great the XB1 did at $189).

Cannot wait to see this holiday's NPD and worldwide numbers. I hope all 3 do great.

Kind of hard to gauge which is doing better when one is sold out.

PS4 has been out of stock, as well. It's fulfilled by Amazon, but sold by a 3rd party seller. The XBO might take a week to get to you, but it's still $189 VS $284.

LOL. It was rather a quick switch there.

Switch? Where?

People were talking about software and what other measures the companies could take to help sell the console. You switched it immediately to 'Microsoft' as a company, which doesn't change anything concerning the issues being discussed.

The PS5 Exists.

Switch will do just fine in 2018, it still have momentum and I'm sure Nintendo will have something lined up, and for now 3rd party are still releasing games at a good pace. So seems healthy.

PS4 has so many big 1st party games that its going to continue to do well.

MS has the biggest problem, they are going to get squeezed by Nintendo's portability and 2nd console purchase, and squeezed on the lack of any really good/big pulling 1st party games. I like what I've seen with Sea of Thieves but its a MP based game, I would like it to do well as I know someone working on it, but my heart says its just going to do poorly. Crackdown looked trash and unless they've worked really hard since its delay, I can't see them being able to turn it around, it seemed a little too thin of gameplay like Agents of Mayhem. The zombie game they are doing, its coming out on PC... and so really theres very little to get excited about. Now I suspect MS has probably spent money courting 3rd parties to release only on Xbox, what those titles will be will be interesting. If they are like Tomb Raider, there will be internet meltdowns (and rightly so). Hopefully its not games that have a history on PS.

So Overall my 2018 thoughts are:

Sony and Nintendo will continue to do well and will swap NPD wins.
MS will be bringing up the rear, but considering their declines this year, probably will be up a small amount or flat YOY.

ARMS is having a nice resurgence without any special promotions. It went from being uncharted before the holiday rush to being a regular on the hourly top 100.

You calling all these games high quality before their actual release?

It's getting most of the games the PS4 is getting so it has that going for it. And you listed three exclusives for XBox, the same number you listed for the PS4.

I feel Microsoft just gotta get the marketing right and it could have a good year.

What I mean is that Anthem is an extremely high profile looking game, did you see the graphics on anthem? the map? the traversal capabilities? it looks fricking amazing and I don't think any game has done that, at least not in an open world shared multiplayer experience... for all I know it could be littered with loot boxes and terrible business decisions, but as a game, looking at just its gameplay and graphics (yes I love good graphics), it looks like the future. I know destiny 1 felt like the future at one point but Anthem feels like the future to me and I'm sure to a few other people too.

I recall seeing some of it and I agree, it looks interesting. Of note however is how it was Microsoft that got to show it off at their E3 event. Makes me wonder if it's Microsoft that'll be the one advertising it on their platform.

Could help provide a boost.

For Microsoft, comparing their exclusives to PS4's, it doesn't look good. I mean

Crackdown 3 vs. God of War? (really?)

State of Decay 2 vs Last of Us 2? (we know which is better)

Sea of Thieves vs Spiderman? (ooohh no contest)

If you're talking about looks, that's a matter of opinion. If you're talking about quality, seems a bit hasty to make such an assessment.

We know which one looks cooler from the gameplay and trailers alone, so no contest at all. Halo 6 is all the Xbox has to revive itself right now.

The first sentence is purely opinion. And you seem to be implying that this industry is a zero-sum business. It's not.

People are able to own more than one platform, I'm sure you're aware of this.

In my opinion, RDR2, Anthem and God of War alone will be overwhelming presences in gaming 2018 and I don't think the switch can compete with that, to truly reach a larger audience it needs shooters and western publishers to support it and it doesn't have that sort of support.

The Wii. Never got a GTA or RDR and yet managed to be very successful.

Among a number of things, adisababa mentioned an "early death" for the console:

Xbox, unless their exclusives garner great reviews i.e. Crackdown 3, state of decay 2 and sea of thieves (doubt it), I really don't see it getting through 2018 spelling an early death for the console this gen. Ashen, Ori and the Last Night do look cool but they are indie games not capable of pushing Xbox forward. Halo 6 will obviously be announced next year probably slowing down its downfall. Xbox is in danger for sure next year, it doesn't have any of its flagship titles supporting it next year, 2015 had Halo 5, 2016 had Gears 4 and Horizon 3, 2017 will probably have PUBG, but next year it's a mere gamble.

The ultimate authority on XBox's fate is Microsoft so they're very much relevant and if they see a benefit to keeping XBox around, they'll keep it around. They've put up with XBox losing money for years, if they can get XBox to at least break even, I don't see XBox going anywhere.

Additionally, if what I'm reading is accurate, part of the reason why XBox exists in the first place is to help keep the Windows platform relevant in the gaming industry. X1 has the added benefit of providing additional revenue streams not available with the original XBox.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

As for RDR2, if the first game was any indicator, the story will probably be amazing, the graphics look amazing and the story though wow, RDR1 was just wow. The game has a lot of hype.

For the rest of the games, Cod and Battlefield will remain to be console sellers. KH3 has insurmountable hype surrounding it.

You are forgetting that Nintendo is trying to get a Pokemon game out for the Switch by the end of 2018. If they can get it out by the end of 2018 and it will probably be the best selling console exclusive of they year.

RDR2 will probably end as the they years best selling game period I aint disagreeing with that and I think God Of War is gonna do as well as Horizon did. But after Mass Effect Andromeda and Battlefront 2 I fully expect Anthem to fall flat on its face.
