Forums - Nintendo - Super Mario Odyssey Reviews - 97 Metacritic (91 Reviews) - 97 OpenCritic (84 Reviews)

97 is pretty much as high as you can go on metacritic these days. If a game were to launch with a 98 or 99 meta, and keep that score, the internet would implode, and it would be Game of the Decade.

I love it how Slant is pretty much notorious for their clickbait reviews now. They could potentially come in with a 6/10 score and drop Mario down to a 96. That all depends on how much weight metacritic's formula gives them.

Opencritic will always be the better aggregate, because they have a strict process to become a reviewer. You have to prove that you have an audience bigger than 50,000 people, and you have to publish a certain amount of reviews a year.

Seems like they're just as vulnerable

It's amazing how Nintendo is getting two of the most acclaimed games ever in the same year (Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild).

Better doesn't mean all games get higher scores though. It just means more accurrate. All those scores of 10/10 from outlets that rarely do game reviews bumped BotW to 97/100 on metacritic. Meanwhile on Opencritic the score wasn't influenced by that so it wound up a point lower.

Oh, and the three paragraphs in my post weren't meant to be related at all. They were three seperate thoughts, and shouldn't be read as a single thought.

Not sure if it's been brought up, but Game Rankings has SMO as the #1 best-reviewed game ever right now:

I love the comment, there, so nonchalant

In a couple of minutes, I'll be going to get my copy, excited!!! (felt like a kid again wee!)

Nintendo Switch FC: SW-6340-7643-4233 aka Renji

Steam: Lee Roid

Really excellent score so far, although I was expecting this. Game looks dang fun and amazing. Since it's 97 now I feel it may end up dropping a point by the end, due to those few low scores knocking it down a bit. Still, this game's gonna be greeat!

Well there goes my Switch purchase. I expected perfection.

Me too.

I'm taking the +25 Nintendo bias into account, so the real Metascore is probably around 72 right now.

Very very very disappointed in Koizumi for leading Mario into the depths of critical reception hell.

I WON A BET AGAINST AZUREN! WOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

:3

Odyssey looks and feels a lot more like a proper game in the vein of SM64/Sunshine/Galaxy. That's why I've been so excited for it. Don't get me wrong, SM3DW was good and all, but there's an ocean of difference between it and the rest of the 3D Mario games.

BotW felt like more of a true sequel to OoT too. Majora's Mask, Windwaker, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword all felt less open than OoT despite being more recent games. It was as if Nintendo just couldn't make a Zelda game with the same size and scope as OoT. Then BotW came out and not only matched OoT in scope, but beat it easily.

It's like both Mario and Zelda stopped moving forward for a time. For Mario it was one game. For Zelda it was almost twenty years. Now Nintendo has gone into overdrive, and both series are on full blast. If Nintendo keeps on pulling out all the stops, Metroid Prime 4 could be another game with 97/100.
