Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo intends to maintain a steady stream of releases for Switch

It's the fastest route to getting Smash Bros. on the Switch and Smash 4 is already *ahem* smashing with content and incredible fanfare that would make any gamer wet him/herself.
The community generally feels that Smash Wii U in particular had its legs cut short, and find it quite a shame since it's nearly unanimously agreed that out of the two versions, the Wii U one is the superior, definitive verison (though Smash 3DS has its' pros as well).

Meanwhile, a brand new Smash Bros. game from scratch would be at least 3-4 years of development and resources if they started today, that puts Smash 5 at around 2020/2021, and I don't think the community doesn't want to wait that long for a new Smash Bros. on the Switch. At that point, Switch 2 would be looming so, Nintendo might even push it even further back to meet the launch of that system.
Additionally, developing and directing Smash 4 took a huge toll on Sakurai, the man was in a sling, working with one arm trying to develop the game. So it's understandable if he's quite burned out and not particularly eager to get back on the helm for a new Smash Bros. just yet.

Thus, porting the latest version that everyone still clearly cares about makes the most logical and efficient sense. It clearly worked with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.  So

Smash 4 is on Wii U and 3DS. It is literally on both a home console and a handheld already. Asking for it a third time is just stupid. If there were so many good Wii U titles worth porting, the why the fuck wouldn't people just buy a Wii U? Ughhhhh.

Because the Wii U is a terrible piece of hardware that is overpriced and irrelevant. Great games, but nobody is going to fork over $300 on a system that is dead, especially when they can get the other one.

Regardless, I do not want two Smash titles on one console just as I do not want two Mario Kart titles on one console. One title is enough to last four or five years - a generation. Smash 4 is finished at this point. I do not want one out tomorrow, I already have one to play right now. Get me a new one with that Smash quality. I can wait and so can you.

I can wait, yeah. But can the Smash Bros. fanbase. When they want something, they're not going to let it go easily. Just look at the GameCube controller. Even people who have a Wii U want it on Switch so they can leave their Wii U behind, and people who have it on 3DS want the Wii U version on Switch so they can have the superior, definitive version on a handheld.

I used to get excited at the sight of these topics. Now I read them and get disgusted, frustrated, and angry. What happened?

Smash 4? Why not a new Smash? Why do people want remakes? Where is the community going?

Its simple, let Sakurai take the next one off, tweak the existing smash 4 system, add substantial modes like Subspace.

Sakurai is not necessary to continue the Smash series, and losing him would speedup development

Muda Muda Muda Muda Muda Muda!!!!

Take MGS V off that list and you have a very plausible bet.

Not a single new third party game? Only ports of games already released?

Like I said these are my bets, nothing prevents you guys from creating a list too. :)

And it is quite difficult to predict unannounced games from third parties, so I went to a safer side and of course metal gear and tokyo mirage are more personal desires than reality.

1) Wii U has enough games that justify the hardware. You cannot have it both ways. You cannot say it was horrible but has great games. A console is defined by its games. Also, 3DS is not a horrible piece of hardware so you can still buy the game there. And you are done.

2) Everyone can wait. Smash is only 3 years old. You literally are asking for a port of a game that is on 2 consoles already in less than a generation cycle. It causes fatigue for the next Smash title. I have a Wii U and a 3DS and a Switch and I am saying I do not want it. So, not everyone agrees. But I do not think anyone would argue with a brand new Smash title over a Smash 4 remake. You guys are getting complacent and your expectations need to be raised. It is depressing watching a community that says too many ports are bad literally have a list of nothing but ports for Switch. I want new games. If I wanted Wii U or 3DS games, I would buy them on Wii U or 3DS.

Note: not all ports are bad. I am not saying there should never be any ports at all. I am saying can the community do a better job of handling their, "immediate gratification" emotions and demand a new game once in a while?

We've gotten a new Zelda, Splatoon, 3D Mario and Xenoblade this year.

I'm not done with Smash 4, a lot of people aren't, and you can't equate the WiiU and 3DS versions. Many people haven't had the chance to play the full version, or any version at all. As you said, Smash 4 is only 3 years old, and it still has a lot of life left in it.

Just because a few of you are done with the game doesn't mean everyone else is.

Also not sure why you're trying to re-write history, but the WiiU's problems are well known by now, and it had nothing to do with a lack of great first-party exclusives. There were many other reasons why people who would've bought those games didn't bother to get a WiiU.

1) So?

2) Many people? Smash 4 sold 14 million units. It is the second best selling game in the franchise upon my last check (could be the best selling... I am not going to check right now). It is the second best selling fighting game in history upon last check (again that could have changed but I am not going to check). I would say a lot of people played the title. I would argue the audience that wanted to play the title has the title somewhere.

3) I only argued that it is not universally agreed upon.

4) I did not rewrite Wii U's history. I said a console is quantified by its games. Wii U has good games? Then the console is worth purchasing. That is not revisionist history; rather, that is the fact. Dreamcast has about 15 good titles so guess what, I bought one and those titles. If there are enough good games to justify buying the console, buy the console. You cannot have it both ways. Annnnnnddddddd this is you completely ignorning the fact that the game is on 3DS because that really hurts your argument. You see, even if you say Wii U was trash and subsequently the Wii U's version of Smash 4 was trash, the 3DS version still exists and people played it there, too. And since 3DS is a great console with decent tech, many games, and most of all good sales, your argument is finished.

I didn't ignore it, I explained it simply and clearly. Anyone who's played both versions can tell you they don't even compare. I'd imagine a lot of people who only tried the 3DS version, would be willing to pick up the much better version for console, but just not on WiiU.

You also can't just make a simple statement like, "a console is quantified by its games. Wii U has good games? Then the console is worth purchasing." That ignores so many variables about what happens during the console generation, and it doesn't reflect the mindset of every consumer, especially considering how many consumers didn't even know of the WiiU's existence.

You seem to be the only one here conveniently ignoring important details.

1) That's your reply? Hahahahahaha.

2) Yes I can. And I gave you an example of my integrity to that position. Unless you are going to say Wii U had a RRoD situation which made the games LITERALLY unplayable, you have 0 excuse. I know why Wii U failed. I am saying unless you have a reason which hinders the games (you can't) unplayable... let me put it like this, we are not buying game comsoles because it has netflix. If the games are there and you want them, buy a Wii U. But still, all your arguments are gone. Your position is reduced to, "I want it now" which is OK. But that does not mean I think it is healthy. I have my own opinion and that opinion is Smash 5 would be far more welcomed than a third version of Smash 4. Your, "consumers may not have known of Wii U's existence" is nullifed by them knowing of 3DS's existence. This is too easy.

3) Hahahahahahaha. Not only did you fail to produce any (you leave it up to me and then say I am ignoring details. That is laughable) details, but you also know damn well your point is obsolete. Your position reminds me why I get frustrated with the gaming community. Hate Wii U but not its games. Like, is there a better reason to buy a Wii U than for its games? I think the best reason to buy a Switch is for Switch titles and not Wii U rehashes.

I don't need to buy a WiiU, I already own one.

Never said or implied "I want it now", just that I'd be intrested, and that it makes sense.

Knowing of 3DS automatically made people aware WiiU was a new console?

Never said I hate WiiU or that you should hate WiiU. Just a fact that hardly anyone bought one, and wasn't because a lack of great exclusives which many would love to buy even now, but for Switch.

I can't argue with someone who constantly misrepresents my positions.

I suspect a lot of unnanounced games will start popping up especially with the 3DS support slowly dwindling. My expectation:

- Animal Crossing
- Mario Party
- Fire Emblem
- Donkey Kong
- Kirby
- Yoshi

Probably a few of these:

- Mario Maker 2/NSMB Switch
- Metroid
- Smash (new or port)
- Pikmin 4
- More switch ports

Those four are already announced.

But yea, so many people when thinking of new games only think of console devs and what they are doing.

I'm very curious to see what many of the 3DS devs do.

You dont have any more seperate console and seperate 3DS (handheld) devs, Nintendo merged their handheld and home console software divisons in just one division, and almost hole that division is working on games just for Switch.
