Your giving kids too much credit.  Wii U was a failure because Nintendo fucked up everything.  Xbox One X is a high end console.  How many rich kids can beg their parents for one?

Its not just rich kids. relatively speaking the XBOX 1 X is cheap.

An ipad with 4g LTE and decent size hard drive is 3x the price and there is a monthly fee data. Samasung note 8 is 1500 here where im from. 

I think kids have the power to make their parents just use the visa for a 500 dollar toy when they already carrying around much higher priced electronics on a daily.

Anywho, I believe the X1X will stimulate sales. People will upgrade, some will buy it simply because it offers the most polished console ports. It will help get the X1 userbase to 40 million faster.

Is it gonna be some huge game changer though? No, not really. But MS will benefit by having the best ports, its a talking point.

Yet they are gradually moving themselves to PC only.  We all know consoles these days are just cheap PCs.  I see no future for Micorosoft in the conosle market.  They already confirmed that with how much dedication they showed with publishing games for their consoles.  They showed as much support as Sony showed with the Vita.

I have no doubt XOX will hit strong out of the gate, but I think it will fizzle quickly once the core Xbox crowd gets theirs. Microsoft needs to rebrand Xbox as Surface Home and bring a full Windows expereince locked behind the Windows Store Walled Garden. This will give them a better image with the wider audience, and any true Xbox fan will stick around. Microsoft needs to give its console its own image, and nothing could be better than than making it a super optimized/simplified Windows PC.

As long as its not a flop to MS than that's all that matters. They clear said time and time again this machine isn't for everyone, just like a Porsche isn't for everyone. Some will want the VW beetle while lesser few will choose the Porsche.
Its another option for console only gamers who want to experience true 4k in there living rooms. Its not meant to compete with the S or PS4 models. It is its own thing.

When calculating sales between Wii U, PS4, Xbox One and Switch, the Xbox One has 38.6% of the market in the US. The PS4 has 44.2%. That's only a 5.6% difference. So, at least in that territory, people definitely "give a shit".
