Forums - Gaming - PUBG exec contemplating 'further action' over Fortnite Battle Royale similarities

You're saying they are ripping off the game, I'm saying they're not (otherwise Unreal Tournament would be a Quake II rip-off, which it's not). So let's agree to disagree.

I'm not going for another form of a cheap cop out either.

You think it's fine for a AAA studio, bigger than an indie one, with it's own engine, si fine in taking what it can from the indie under it's wing, I don't.

This kind of thing doesn't sit well within the art industry and at times (yes, it does) it doesn't within the games industry (like it or not).

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Disagreeing with you is a cheap cop out?  Come on now.

AAA studio or indie makes no difference to me. I disapprove of blatantly copying a game or its assets (like Limbo of the Lost copying Oblivon, or Legend of the Titan being a cheap Chinese rip-off from Overwatch). Fortnite adapting PUBG's game mode is more akin to Crash Team Kart Racing being a nod to Mario Kart to me. Is it original? No. But who cares? If a genre is succesful, other devs will make their own versions of it. Can't see anything wrong with it.

"agree to disagree".

mskes no difference to you, to me it does, because I look at the value of the company, size of staff, scope of project, monety they have, money they make etc, taking all that into account makes for variable differences, rather than simply looking at Mechanic A and mechanic B and calling both studios the same and equals.

Who is going to force China to stop blantantly ripping off everyone? (since we're talking an entire country vs one studio telling said country to knock it off, that'll work for sure).

I find that they had all the time in the world to make a BR mode, yet they only chose to when PuB exploded. They had years to foster that kind of craze that's been created.

It's not like Epic didn't admit being heavily inspired by PUBG. That's why they adapted its game mode, they were heavily inspired by it. But a blatant rip-off? Not if you ask me. The games have way too many differences. So yes, let's agree to disagree here as neither of us are going to change our minds about the topic.

They had to adapt the game mode with their crafting element, otherwise it would have come off as a complete rip off, that's not some off the shelf choice made entirely for giggles.

I'm not going to agree to disagree. I just flat out disagree with your take on things, I know you and I are never going to see eye to eye after this point so I'm not going to bother with the agree to disagree part (because we'll be saying it over and over for each time we butt heads, so I'd rather save the time).

I don't have PUBG and I haven't tried Fortnite, but it feels like we've gone over this discussion too many times on this site. I remember leaning on the wrong side when the demo for Dante's Inferno was released. This is simply what happens when you make a successful game. Other devs use what they believe are you good ideas and try to make them their own.

If you really like PUBG then this either ends well for your or makes no difference. You get a new game to play If the Fortnite version is good for you, or you can ignore it if you don't like it. If you don't like PUBG then perhaps you'll like Fortnite instead. If neither appeals to you then this all means nothing for you. Toss in a new 3rd game and the same questions arise. This is just how genres work.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isnt all of PUBG based on a mod? Isnt all of it just a polished, STOLEN concept? I don't mind that, not saying that, but it is what it is, right?

It is, but the guy making PUBG is also the guy who made those mods.

Still... it's far from an original concept though. Just the first time it's really been done to that extent in a video game.

Oh, its the same guy :o

Hm. Still expecting many games to cover the same concept :/

Haha, I respect your side of the argument, but what's the difference between disagreeing and agreeing to disagree? Geniune question 'cause for me it's the same?

The more I think about this, the sillier it gets. This isn't the time to publicly whine & throw shade, it's the time to stand up and say, "Hey everyone, we made this little game nicknamed PUB-G, you may have heard of it. Other games have started using our ideas, but none of them have all the complexity and finesse that we do. Here are reasons why you should stick with our game and not jump ship to clone #3." Keep patching & improving it, advertise to make the (clunky) name known to non-gamers, put out a bit of merch, and generally make it known PUB-G is the original unofficial Battle Royale video game.

It's an interesting thought. I mean if this was say board games and someone made a reskinned Monopoly, they would get sued and the game would never see light of day.

Yet in video games, there are copy cats everywhere. A new creative game or mode comes out and there are soon hundreds. Case in point some form of Zombie mode, or this topic.

Gameplay elements are not protected by intellectual properties. If they were, "jumping" would have been pantented long ago.

As long as they don't use assets from PUBG, they are fine. It's just another developper that threw a decent game with not enough ressources and is now worried over the competition, when all they can do is improve their game and let the players choose.
