Forums - Microsoft Discussion - If MS fixes their lack of exclusives they would be in a really nice position

If Wii U sold a lot of units it would've been a good gen.

But it's easier said than done.

This has been a really bad year for MS exclusives made to look much worse because Sony started the year with Horizon, GR2, and The Show. Before 2017 though their first party/moneyhat exclusive output were very close. I think people make a mug bigger fuss about it online than it is in reality. Microsoft has had many problems this gen, exclusives isn't close to the top imho.

But yeah, more games is always better.

Well, when comparing libraries, that's definitely at the top for me.

Wrong and very short-sighted.

I believe you said in previous threads you want MS to leave the console business so it's hard for me to take anything you say seriously.

"I personally don't think Sony's first party has been heaps better than MS this generation"

In what universe, good sire? I get that exclusive games are down to a personal taste or subjective but come on, Sony has been handing out first party titles (and the dreaded console exclusives) like it's their job, because it is. A vast majority get good reception and decent sales that merit continued focus on these type of exclusive experiences to the PS4 that hit just about every niche possible.

Basically, my take away is that MS is doing everything well (which I agree with wholeheartedly) BUT delivering experiences unique to its platform, which with XB1 been so similar to the PS4 in concept and performance, it should be priority numero uno.

That's like saying if Nintendo grabs 3rd Party Support they would be in a nice position.

Of course they would, but it is not that simple.

For Microsoft to have its own output of exclusives like Sony or Nintendo, they would have to make deep changes in their structure, which could take years, tons of years.

Will Microsoft be patient enough to wait, a decade or more (?) to get on the same level as Sony and Nintendo?

We are talking about easily Hundreds of Millions of Dollars, and we already know what some insiders are saying (Zhuge).

Honestly the restructuring process for Microsoft to have stellar first party would take billions of dollars. I wish it was hundreds of millions. They could easily spend that on moneyhatting.

Like I said before, Compared to last gen the quality and quantity is down. Same with Xbox. Yes, overall the PS4 has had a lot of great exclusives, but looking at just first party studio games it hasn't been as strong, or imo much better than Xbox. I thought Sony was kinda weak from 2013-2015 but started to pick it up since last year. 3rd party exclusives have been great on the other hand throughout. Once Last of Us 2 an God of War releases I will change my mind.

Sony first party has blown MS first party out the water..

Uncharted, Horizon, inFamous, Gravity Rush, MLB, TLG, DriveClub, Knack, Killzone, with much more coming. On the other hand, MS has released Halo, Gears, Halo Wars, Forza, with Sea of Thieves & Crackdown on the way, but that's it. Every other notable exclusive has been made by a third party.

MS do have a few interesting IP's they can bring back, maybe they can out source some for sequels?

I do think they should start taking risks with new IP's, giving studios like 343 & Coalition, (didn't their new IP get scrapped for Gears?) free reigns creatively. Gears & Halo are better suited for the next gen.

Sounds like a request for a brief analysis.

This generation

Microsoft dug themselves a huge hole with their original vision for the Xbox One. Today they are only borderline competitive in their strongest markets, namely the USA and the UK. Xbox One is a non-factor in Japan and treading water in mainland Europe. An increase in the output of exclusive games would be largely to completely irrelevant to their sales performance in Japan and mainland Europe while the best case scenario in the USA and the UK is that they'll get beat by the PS4 by a lower margin than today. That's not a really nice position by any stretch of the imagination.

Next generation

When we are looking at a console that gets as comfortably beaten as the Xbox One, then an increase in the output of exclusive games isn't going to be enough to change the fortunes. Microsoft faces the challenge to convince consumers to switch brands, but consumers tend to stick with the brand they last owned, unless said brand starts to seriously piss them off. That's how Microsoft wasted the advantage the Xbox 360 had in the USA and the UK; had they not messed up so badly with the Xbox One, then Xbox would still be ahead of PlayStation this generation. This means that if Microsoft only offered more exclusive games, they would still need to cross their fingers that Sony seriously messes up with the PS5. A strategy that is reliant on the shortcomings of another company is not a really nice position either, because the most important factor for success is not in Microsoft's hands.

From here we could dive deeper and talk about other big issues the Xbox brand has, but I am not going to make an effort that is still uncertain to be appreciated. An entirely different factor, but a very important one, is if Microsoft still has business motivations to continue in the console market. The end of Xbox-exclusive games and talks about declaring the end of generations - when Microsoft is actually in a position that demands a generational reset to create a new and improved image - do not point towards Xbox 4 being a safe thing to happen.

That's an interesting take. So would you say the early success of X360 was due to PS3 blunders and not because Microsoft built a better mouse trap?

Wonderfully put, completely agree in fact. I've often questioned the relevance of the Xbox brand on the worldwide stage, and it's easy to undertdsand why Microsoft as a whole would have motivation issues in this industry, they have poured so much money into Xbox and the videogame industry and don't have a great deal to show for it three generations in, when you compare them to what Nintendo and Sony had three generations in for example.
