Forums - Website Topics - Proposal: Get political threads off the front page

I don't mind people talking and arguing and fighting on political threads. However, fully removing them from the front page wouldn't be seen in good eyes. I do agree, however, that people can turn off which kind of topics they want to see on the front page. I also think that political threads should be much more moderated without limiting freedom of expression.

That last feature would be fascinating. It gives you the option to ban from the forum, not the website. Although it may encourage poor behavior. You can troll forum A knowing that if you get banned, you still have forum B C D etc.

If a member is fine in Sony discussion but causing problems in Xbox and Nintendo discussion, wouldn't it be better to keep a potentially positive member of the community on the forum instead of removing them entirely because they can't keep shit together in "opposition" forums?

The ban wouldn't just be from the specific forum, but from all places. When they return from the ban, we just restrict access to specific sub-forums.

I don't like this idea at all to be honest, I think this is fine the way it is now. What you're suggesting would be essentially allowing people to go be an ass on a forum they don't care about (even if only once) without any consequences. Anyone who is an ass anywhere deserves a website ban for being an ass, period.

That, and I don't like that you didn't include Music and Movie discussion in off-topic, too.

Didn't you read what I said? I said the ban would be site-wide, not just from the specific forum. Upon return from the ban, be it 1 week or 2 weeks or 20 days, they would have no access to (as an example) Nintendo discussion but other areas of the site would be open to them, as it is right now after a ban.

Music and Movies doesn't really need a dedicated forum, it can easily be placed under general off topic (as can sports, tech or whatever else). Politics and NSFW can be seperate sub-forums because of the controversial topics which may be discussed where people can choose to filter that out. This isn't too major though, just my own preference.

How would you go about that?  What things would you moderate that aren't moderated today?  We have to be careful not to let our own political views influence our moderations.

I guess that's true. The lines are blurred in a Politics thread, so mods have to tread lightly when moderating other users' posts. The rules here are pretty straightforward, but there's some who hide behind the "freedom of expression" carte blanche to come up with the most heinous things and completely ruin a thread. Right now, the threads are properly policed, but something should be done to avoid them to turn into a shit-slinging fest and ultimately locked.

We actually try. Sometimes, we let borderline comments go (as we do with most topics), but with Political ones, we will lock a thread before moderating anyone in particular cases. At least, that's my way of doing it. However, the problem with "freedom of expression" is that it will allow some users to think they can get away with saying anything they please (and this usually turns into outright insults [sometimes disturbing] towards other posters). That is where I, on my own, draw the line!

I guess that's a slightly better approach than moderating a group, especially on a derailed thread. Some users shouldn't be exempt of being moderated just because they are convinced "freedom of expression" is a way to drop everything off your mind unfiltered. It's common decency.

There are currently two political topics on the front page. I haven't clicked on either, but one is by far the hottest topic on the board. Yes, let's get rid of the hottest topic. Makes sense.

The mods control thread titles. As such, nothing on the front page is offensive or off-putting. The only way to see something that bothers you is if you actually click on a topic. If you go in there and come out butt hurt or offended or with a lowered opinion of the human race, blame yourself for clicking. Wanting the topics hidden is like an alcoholic begging for prohibition when most people seem to want a brew.

That's what I've been trying to say, the simple fact is that political threads are popular on vgc and it has alwasy been that way. You know a member who left because of politics? That doesn't really say much.

People come and go all the time. That's life, deal with your separation anxiety reasonably instead of whining about a topic or two you don't like seeing on the front page.

I agree. Get all political/non-gaming threads off the front page.

Are you living in Turkey?! Just asking cause that's exactly how things are handled there.

When I go into a clothing store, it's to look at or buy cloths... not get a lap dance from a stripper. How hard is this to understand? This is a website dedicated to gaming and gaming sales... not politics. If I wanted politics, I'd go to a political site.

This is very simple stuff.

If you remove politics from the front page....

please please plllllleeeeaaasssseeee dont remove music and movies and anime and general from it too : (

I find the political threads to be fine, but then again, I'm not really in the thick of it lol. I can see why many people may be frustrated by their presence here, on a site primarily meant for other topics. Whatever makes people happier :)

In a scenario where we might be able to do anything with hot topics it'd almost certainly be to just bring filtering to front page

If we can't do that then I'd guess we'd just gather VGC users thoughts and then decide, likely focusing on Politics for now as that seems to cause the most annoyance to front page browsers.

A filter option would be great. It's just I see a lot of people itt with the attitude of "If you are going to remove politics, why not remove every extra ciricular" which I feel is false equivalency, since those threads I mentioned are usually the most peaceful places on the site.
