Forums - Nintendo - Game Freak excited to see the main way people play Switch, will try to make a Pokemon game that meets expectations

They just need to bring the expanded edition of Pokemon go to the switch for starters. Done.

would be cool if there is a way to make it work

for me, the best possible Switch Pokemon would an open-world HD Kanto region with all the first 151 pokemon and whole new mechanisms, that would kick-off a new era for Pokemon, since there are already too many so we don't need new ones, they could just introduce more megas or forms

then again this is just me, I'm pretty sure there are many who are expecting a new region with new pokemon

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

A masterpiece indeed.

I just hope the Switch game has a good amount of post-game content (and US/UM too).

Sounds like something we won't be getting until late 2019 at earliest.

From the sound of this interview, I'd say 2020 or later is more likely.  If they are truly wondering how the system will be used, and feel that is of central importance to the development process, then they must be in early brainstorming stages.

Would Nintendo want it to be released that late into the Switch's life, though? I assume they'd get involved themselves to avoid that from happening.

I get that and it's really hard to say which record was broken at times. Nevertheless, the games are successful and most fans appeared to have like these games for what they are. I'm not saying that they're the GOATs or something but it's kinda weird hearing someone say that the series is destroyed by one new generation of games in which it's hard for me to believe. Granted, I personally like Pokémon Sun for some of its change-ups from the usual formula so maybe that's what's making me disagree, but even then I don't usually hear people completely bad mouth the generation like that. Though it's his opinion so more power to him.

That's what an opinion is for. I for one know more than a few people who were left with a bad taste in their mouth after playing Sun & Moon.

The thing is, Sun & Moon were an actual, real step forward for the franchise, mostly in every way. It's just, it feels like Game Freak was hellbent on making steps forward without even looking at where they were going - so while sometimes they were stepping into beautiful flower fields with stuff like getting rid of HMs, Ride Pokémon (which still have a lot of room for improvement, but it's something), no more chibi artstyle, trainers appearing in-battle, among other things; they also sometimes stepped on horse crap, with dumb bullshit like Z-moves, Ash-Greninja, Alola forms, Ultra Beasts and getting rid (in a way) of Mega Evolutions.

In the end, I think those games were far from terrible, actually on their own they were pretty alright - the problem with Pokémon is that no game is ever "on its own". If this was, say, Zelda having a new game introduce some ideas I hate, I wouldn't bother as much because I know those are most likely exclusive to that one game, but with Pokémon you know every single thing that gets introduced is going to continue existing forever, so any bad ideas that go through are permanent damage (no, I'm not happy about shit like Blonde Dugtrio and Bewear being around forever).

That's why I can't get my hopes up for new games. Not only am I scared that they will introduce even more shitty ideas (because that's all Ohmori has ever done), but I already know that all the shitty ideas that were already introduced before will still exist.

Then I guess we'll agree to disagree on this and I have no problem with that. Personally the Z-moves are pretty cool and at least it's only once per battle so it's not abused. Alolan Pokémon are interesting with the changes in climate being factors (Aloln Vulpix and Ninetales are so...pretty). I know they hinted about how certain Pokémon adapt to certain climates but seeing them going all out on it with certain Pokémon completely changing forms was an nice step into that realm. Though I wish they utilized it more than Gen I. Ultra Beasts are interesting though I'm not sure how they'll implement that in future games. I will admit that it's unfortunate that there's only one exclusive form in Ash-Greninja and not for other Pokémon.

I would hope that the Switch is not more than half way through its life in 2020....

In any case, Switch is (relatively) powerful hardware.  I don't see AAA games being made in less than 3 years, unless they're using a ton of existing assets.  Pokemon doesn't likely have much in the way of assets to be used on Switch.

They will take Ragnarok Online Sprites and will sell it to us as a next gen game. Thats gamefreak. They even donr know what UE4 is.

Mainline Pokemon games haven't been using sprited for 5 years, keep up

---

OT: I'm interested as well. They'll have to come up with a way to balance the playstyles of people on the go and people who like to sit at home and be immersed in the game world. Hopefully the game isn't so obnoxiously hand-holdy like Sun and Moon were.

I'm pretty sure current Pokémon games still use sprites, you know.

None of the character models are sprite-based anymore, that's essentially what he was referring to. NPCs, your character, Pokemon in battle are all 3D. If he's complaining about character portraits being sprites, then he'll have to complain about a lot of modern JRPGs XD

Part of the issue comes from fans who don't really understand what they're asking for?

"Make an open world game." and "Pokémon is perfect for open world."

I don't think it's true that Pokemon would actually be all that great as an open world game. It seems to be a game that requires progression and leveling up. This demands a more linear world where players have a general order to complete things in. It COULD be open world in a similar way to Xenoblade Chronicles X, but I am really not sure how that improves the experience since exploration isn't really very big in Pokemon.

Making a game open world just for the sake of making it open world usually doesn't work out very well.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I don't want Pokémon to be open world, but I understand the sentiment. People want an ambitious and expansive Pokémon game, and "open world" is a term that gets that point across.

I don't want full on open world either.  But Xenoblade Chronicles X or even just Xenoblade Chronicles style would work for me.  Just a larger, more expansive world.

If they make a mainline title, i might be tempted to get the switch.
