Part of the issue comes from fans who don't really understand what they're asking for?

"Make an open world game." and "Pokémon is perfect for open world."

I don't think it's true that Pokemon would actually be all that great as an open world game. It seems to be a game that requires progression and leveling up. This demands a more linear world where players have a general order to complete things in. It COULD be open world in a similar way to Xenoblade Chronicles X, but I am really not sure how that improves the experience since exploration isn't really very big in Pokemon.

Making a game open world just for the sake of making it open world usually doesn't work out very well.
