Higher resolutions are always better when hardware to support it exists. Right now we don't even have the fucking plugs to support 4k144Hz let alone GPUs to handle that load.

I will go 8k as soon as the technology is there, but for now I'm still waiting for the technology to be there for 4k.

HDMI 2.1 can do 8k120.
DisplayPort 1.4 can do 8k60, 4k144 and 4k240 with DSC (almost lossless compression).
I am not sure about 4k144 on HDMI 2.1, but 8k120 is more data, so yeah.

That's not with HDR, is it?

I no longer care about resolution at all. Enough is enough and it will never end until we get to the point of matching the human eye. I'll upgrade as I see fit and not really pay attention to what these companies would like me to do.

4K HDR @ 75" in the main room

4K @ 49" in the bed room

4K @ 43" in the office

Running a PS4 Pro in the main room. The other two only have base model PS4's. Planning to get a 7100 Pro this year for the main room, and bumping the OG Pro to the Office.

I am pretty happy with 4K at the moment. Still a really long way to go before we get solid support from all content creators and sources.

8K is something that I am looking forward to. I think it will be the last resolution that can bring me benefits in my current house. I can't go any bigger than 120", and I think 8K will handle that size without issue.

On a side note, I think HDR is much more important on traditional displays at this point that resolution. Producing a more acurate image is key to better TVs now. Where resolution is extreamly important is VR, current VR does not even fill our FOV, and even these limited sized displays show just how limited a 2MP display really is. With that said, I am extreamly excited for 8K/16K/32K in the VR space, because it is going to make a massive difference.

The madness about resolution needs to stop.

It really doesn't.

Deminishing returns (visually)

There is diminishing returns on smaller displays. On larger ones? There is a ton of room for improvement.

Does anyone here already have a 4k panel, and if so what have been your impressions on the increased pixel count.

I used to run 7680x1440 over 3 panels which is more than 4k. (And before that, 5760x1080)

It was glorious. The reason for the downgrade to a single 2560x1440 panel was due to the hardware required to push such insane pixels and I got tired of constantly upgrading hardware.

UI scaling is pretty bad, Steam on Linux does not scale to 4k, and I have to sit real close to read text, and there are more examples I could bring up (but cannot be bothered to confirm to see if that is still the case).

Which is why I am content sitting at 2560x1440 for the immediate future. Scaling.

is there really a need to upgrade from 4k? which is really crisp and clear. i think resources would be much better off put into other things than 8k.

The larger your screen, the larger the pixels.

Someone using a 32" TV from a few meters away will likely not benefit moving from 1080P to 4k.
But someone with a 70" display and sits at the same distance would see massive gains.

Next gen it ll be 4k, and the one after that too.

That all comes down to the PC.
If the PC doesn't have the hardware to drive 4k (It doesn't yet) in the mid range, then don't expect a console to do it.

I switched from 1440x900 to 1080p a few years ago on PC (and I still miss, if not 4:3 anymore, 16:10 aspect ratio, it's a lot better for everything but games and more than good enough for games), and on TV I did it from SD to 768p even later, and just last year to 1080p, I'm fine with 1080p for the next few years.
4k will come when it will be dirt cheap and, on PC, when it won't only be cheap, but also passive cooled GPUs will support it at decent framerates.
8k, well, will it be during this life or later?

Dell still sells 2560x1600 panels if you are still keen on 16:10. It's also an upgrade from the pesantry 1080P and lower resolutions. ;)

I'm still at 1080p but by the end of the year i plan to have upgrade my TV to a 4k oled and buy a 4k freesync HDR monitor for the PC.

Nice, 1440p is still much better than 1080p at least.
I only use my 4k for games, but multiple monitors are fantastic for productivity, currently I have a 4k TN and a 1440p IPS.

What are you thoughts on ultrawides?

I need 8k like I need a hole in the head (as my parents would say lol). I'm still VERY happy with the way 1080p looks on my monitor for pc and my projector for Switch. Not to mention, monitors not being very large I don't feel it would be worth it to make that high of a resolution unless it was so mainstream that it was cheap.

As for my projector, thankfully Nintendo doesn't make products that can utilize cutting edge resolution like 8k is right now, so they probably won't have a device that can actually look better on 8k for another 2-3 generations (maybe 10-15 years from now?).

1080p is more than enough.

My research indicates you need at least one hole in your head, you cannot live without at least one.
