Forums - Sales Discussion - Blu-rays sale percentage tracking

i can't possibly see how blu ray would ever be dvd sales.

sure you get huge numbers once in awhile for stuff liek Batman, Spiderman, and (Starwars, LOTR be huge) ect. But for the average movie which is like 95% or more of the movies out there people ain't gonna be like OMG I need to see my chick flick or romance, or comedy in high def.

The differences just aren't worth it for all but action movies to spend the extra 10-15 dollars on each DVD.

But eventially Blue Ray can be near DVD prices. Why not buy the Hi Def version then? And who is to say how the extra features in Blue Ray titles will evolve? They might offer something DVD just couldn't in the future.

like what extra features, commentary? behind scenes? ect.

Man I can't think of anyone that even cares about that stuff at all. I think in my life I only watched some of the LOTR stuff and then the Gladiator stuff. Oh and star wars.

Still with prices dropping huge to dvd prices, then that means I can get a super cheap dvd. Still dvd for me on anything but awesome action movies i like (pirates caribbean, batman, lotr, star wars, ect) The rest I will be completely fine with dvd if I even buy it at all.

Netflix and online streaming is so easy and good now. Heck I watched some movies today through netflix on 360 earlier today and wow it is like perfect dvd quality for em, and some in HD. Now how easy is that to watch. Before the so called price of blu ray discs are cheap enough the online way will be even better and easier. And again the price of DVD's will be like a hay day.

Heck walking in a store and seeing a movie you like in the discount bin 3-5 dollars, you grab quickly and think "sweet, what an awesome deal"

Edit: yes and I do have a PS3, but I get my blu ray movies through netflix in the mail.  don't own a single blu ray movie.

this is why chick flicks and romances wont be very big sellers till Blu-ray hits a larger market. Porn will be the major seller once more pornos are made on Blu-ray.

well while porn did help the vhs become the winner I dont' see it being the case anymore with the internet.

The internet won no matter what war you thought was going on with formats and porn. It doesn't matter if every release is on blu ray of every porno ever it won't make a huge difference. Too much easily accessable FREE naked women to look at online to be a big deciding factor.

Also having a big box of porn in your house of a hidden folder on YOUR PERSONAL computer, which is more secret. Easier to get rid of, or hide. Don't rely on porn like the early 80's to win this for ya guys. Heck who even owns a legit porno blu ray movie? ANYONE? Heck even DVD for that matter. I sure as heck don't know anyone of my friends anywhere that do

Who knows what kind of interactive experiances can be added with all that space. Also, there are plenty of people who watch extras in movies, that's why they are added and so many people by the two disc special edition. Also, it's worth to note that when first released DVDs had the same price tag that Blu Ray discs do now. It didn't stop DVD and it's foolish to think that it would stop Blu Ray. Just like with DVD the price of Blu Rays will reduce in price to compete with DVD as they become cheaper to publish.

Also, you might think netflix and online streaming will become the standard, but I for one do not. Many people prefer to buy the real thing and have it physically in their hands and DVD still makes billions dispite streaming. With your logic by the way, DVD shouldn't have become the standard due to VHS prices. I'm sure you could get a VHS in a bargain bin for a low price when the DVD was out. Didn't stop a thing. You know why, because people want the new thing, the better thing, even if they don't need it. We want the new car. The new clothes. The new game. The new everything. It's the way we are.

You can't compare blu ray jump from dvd to the jump dvd had from vhs. The jump to dvd was a huge jump and the whole package of dvd vs the big clumpy vhs was a big factor too.

Now you have a slightly better picture, and the HUGE KICKER. If you don't have an HDTV then there is no change. While the dvd jump affected every tv so you didn't have to upgrade to some $2000+ tv to notice it. (now, yes prices of tv's down, but that is because of bad economy, which also means doubtful on peopel buying the tv's anyway less also a blu ray player and blu rays)

We have rebought plenty of our movies that were VHS to be on DVD, but I doubt we will rebuy any to blu ray because of the fact that the quality jump isn't that much better to warrant the price of paying another $price for a movie we already own that still plays in our Blu Ray player, and upscales it.

I dont want the high definition version cause none of my friends have HD players and I dont want to lug around a BR player just to watch movies at my friends. If my friends all had BR players then I will dive in. If they could do what HDDVD did with the combo disks I would most likely buy the BR/DVD combo version if the price was right.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

As Wii will soon take >50% of video game console market share over two HD consoles, I just can't see how BR can overtake DVD's domination.

People say that BR is outpacing DVD at the same time frame, based on the news that Dark Knight sold 1.7 million units worldwide in the first week, beating Matrix's record of ~1 million when launched in 1999. But no one mentioned that in 1999, when Matrix DVD launched, DVD players had been outselling VCRs by 13 to 1. Also at that time, 60 million DVD movies had been sold, compared to just ~20 million BR discs.

Does anyone have any info about the stand-alone BR players sales compared to DVD players so far?

What does the Wii have to do with the adoption of HD media?

Frankly I'm getting tired of these BS arguments... "Oh I don't need HD, DVD is just fine for me...." Well who cares about you? HD is better and it is scientifically provable, the sooner you get over it, the sooner technology can continue to advance. Quit holding back the planet.

I mean if you sit and think about it for a second, can you imagine how much more advanced we would be if people weren't so hesitant to buy something new. If there weren't groups that hold on to old technology because thats what they know and they fear the future.

Here's what YOU need to do.

1. Go out and buy a PS3 or Blu-ray players
2. Start contributing to the advancement of technology buy purchasing HD media
3. Quit crying about your DVD's, don't worry, your new Blu-ray player can play them too.
