Forums - Gaming Discussion - Phil Harrison: "Switch Has The Opportunity To Reach A Wider Audience"

My girlfriend bought one. Only other video game console she has owned is Playstation 2. She is 20 so in her gaming mind, Playstation is to her what Nintendo is to me. Now you know of one person that is not a Nintendo loyalist that bought Switch.

I don't know her though. You could be just making it up. Until the Switch gets past that 15-20 million mark we can't say that many people outside the very loyal nintendo fanbase are buying it. The first 10-15 million sales for any console will be reached by just the harcore fans and people who just have to buy every new piece of tech.

That is silly and a lie. All that means is that you would not acknowledge that people outside, "Nintendo loyalists" were buying Switch until it reached an arbitrary number. But, whatever.

He's right, Sony and Microsoft aren't doing anything currently to appeal to gamers outside of the hardcore faithful, and no, streaming videos will not expand the market, but it's too early to state that Nintendo is even doing this but I do believe they will appeal to more female gamers than the other 2.

Sales prediction, PS4: 122 Million, Xbox one: 50 million, Switch: 105 million.

The key difference between your analysis and Phil Harrison's analysis is that Phil is talking about broadening the range byeond gamers. As far as you are concerned, you are correct. However, that does not mean you are correct at the expense of Phil's point because that is not the case here.

The problem with that is that nintendo canters to a niche portion of gamers and it doesn't have the kind of reach both sony and ms have being companies that have a wide range of services/products. Nintendo can't match the appeal or reach they have. Let's see nintendo match them before we start talking about nintendo broadening the gaming audience beyond sony or ms.

Sentence 1: So? That is not the point of what Harrison is trying to express.

Sentence 2: In traditional gaming circles, I agree. In nongaming circles, that is debatable.

Sentence 3: Match them how? I do not understand what you are saying. However, it is clear that Wii's success was with a different demographic than traditionally understood and that means we do have a prescedence of Nintendo reaching a gaming audience that is outside Sony and Microsoft (the fact that PS3 and XBOX 360 each sold around 80 million that generation proves Nintendo opened a new market that largely unaffected Sony or Microsoft's market). If you mean in terms Switch sales, well, obviously after four months on the market, we cannot say for sure the console will match Sony's PS4 but even if it does not, that is not to say Switch did not reach a different market; rather, it means Nintendo did not reach a bigger market.

So he is saying Switch it a system aimed at casuals and kids and when they grow up and get more into gaming they get more into PS4/XBO.

Oh shit. Didn't see that until I read your comment

Well, he's not entirely wrong. The Switch does appear to have crossover appeal in more ways than one. I'll give 3 examples.
My former boss, who is a die-hard, dedicated, PlayStation gamer, (this guy bought a 4K TV JUST for his PS4 Pro), he was right there in line, right next to me at GameStop, waiting for the clock to strike midnight on March 3rd.

My cousin, who is a die-hard, dedicated, Xbox gamer, has owned all 3 systems, spent all of our trip in Las Vegas trying to find ONE Nintendo Switch. He calls it, "the console of my dreams!"

My older brother, who hasn't been a consistent gamer in YEARS, he hardly ever plays video games anymore. I showed him my Switch, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on it, and he loved it! Now he's trying to save up money so that he can buy one, not just for himself, but for our nephews too.

Of course, only time will tell if that strategy will work, but seeing and hearing stories like mine, his, and GhaudePhaede010's, PLUS the fact that the system is selling out almost everywhere it is stocked, it appears to be working at the moment.

I don't think any of them are growing the market really that much, but I don't think by the same token any of them need to.

The market is huge and more people play games now than at any other era, it's just a lot of gaming happens to be done on smartphone for expanded audiences, but there's still plenty of room for traditional systems to make good money. It's never gonna be like the past though.

Wii - 100 mill + DS - 150 mill + PS3 - 85 mill + XBox 360 - 85 mill + PSP - 80 mill = 500 million systems

This gen ... and I'll be generous here in some of these totals and give the hardware manufacturers benefit of the doubt.

PS4- 110 mill + Switch 90-100 mill + XBox One - 60 mill + 3DS - 70 mill + Vita - 14 mill = 354 million systems

But because so many more people play on smartphones + tablets, there are more total people playing.

I agree. PS4+xbox one players are almost the same xbox/ps2, ps360 public.
But Nintendo have to get more players just because they doesnt have other option, they lost all casual wii and DS public, they have to sind other way to broad their gaming audience.

The title of this thread is inaccurate. He does not say that Sony and MS are not broadening the market.

Phil Harrison is CEO of Xbox right?

If so this explains why Microsoft went to hard after Kinect in the beginning on the Xbox one last generation. They wanted to expand their fan base and grow the market. Now that their plan failed they have no idea what to do. Such a shame to. However Microsoft doesn't have the first party to grow the market only like Nintendo does.

I will give props for them trying though.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

"...... are they growing the market? Are they building and investing in the content and broadening the experiences to bring in more players? It looks to me, from the public announcements at least, that they are increasingly going for the same kind of core, hardcore gamer."

He might be hiding it in PR speak but that's exactly what he's saying and he's right.
