Forums - Gaming - Why I am not participating in mid-gen refreshes this gen.

Seems like a waste of money to me. If this truly is a new way of doing things, I will upgrade every other rehash (which still adds up to the traditional six years roughly).

Sounds like the right choice for you. For me I love consoles, and wanted the best 4K and VR expereince available, so PS4 Pro was an easy purchase. Depending on Microsofts VR plans, the XOX should be easy as well.

I am really happy that we are finally getting this coice in the console space. It always drove me crazy that they did not offer better units at fab shrinks, only offering smaller, and usually cut down versions. I hope this practice continues at every die shrink going forward. I would absolutely love a PS4 Premium at 7nm, followed by PS5 on a more mature 7nm process a year or two later.

Ultimately I would like the choice to buy extreamly high end consoles similar to how I can buy super high end, audio players, recievers, TVs, Speakers, Blu-ray players, and such. I think choice is extreamly important in maintaining and expanding the console market.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

I already bought a 4k TV over a year ago and don't regret it, but I did for movies and TV shows, 4k console gaming is still pretty far away, especially for any mainstream device so I agree with the mid-gen upgrade.
It's pleasant to note that my predictions for the 8th gen have been more or less spot on so far though...

Good to see you were spot on with the predictions. What cojnsoles do you have right now and will you be upgrading at launch next gen?

I only have a PS4 for now, I want a Switch as well but I'm waiting for lower prices on both hardware and especially controllers and software and the rumors of a subscription based retro gaming service is driving me nuts! I also want to upgrade my PC a little bit, maybe get a second GPU, the rig is ready for SLi as is so it won't be complicated.

As for next gen, I never buy consoles in their first year, they're expensive, software is severely limited and costly, lots of firmware issues and little kinks that need working out etc. I only bought my PS4 last May...

tldr; I don't have money

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I have upgraded to the Pro, without an UHD HDR TV in the house. My reasons were purely practical: I needed a second console so I could play with my wife. In that case, why not go for the better version of the console since I'm already spending the money?

I plan on upgrading the TV next year, but no rush for that yet.

Bought a PSVR on launch day.

Bought a PS4 Pro on launch day to improve the PSVR experience.

Bought a 4K TV to improve the PS4 Pro experience.

Getting an Xbox One X on day one, too.

But then, I'm not a casual...

I'm going to upgrade as soon as a silver Pro comes on the market with a game bundle.

Why do I upgrade? It's what I do for 20 years, before this gen I always got the Slim consoles mid gen, now I'll get the Pro versions. I got the PSone, PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim and Superslim, Xbox 360 S.

On PS4 you really dont need to upgrade as games already look great on it, see Horizon and the upcoming God of War.

I will.
Getting the X day 1 and PS4 Pro in the future.

Hmmm... most reviewers said that the upgrade from the PS4 to the Pro is not that great.  Its not worth the upgrade because the change is only slight. Being that you got the console that didnt come with Horizon, are you planning on getting that game or have you already played it?

I do have Horizon, but I've never seen it on a normal PS4 so I can't really compare it. But I at least never ran into some gameplay video or screenshot where I was like "Oh, that looks so much worse than on my TV!". I don't think it would have made any difference if I had played the game on the standard PS4. I play a lot of Battlefield though and I heard the standard PS4 drops quite often in multiplayer below 60 fps, sometimes down to 40 fps while the Pro version holds 60 fps about all the time. I guess that would have turned me off a lot, because I love dem framerates. But again, I would have to directly compare it, which I never did.

Only revision I ever bought was 3DS -> 3ds XL

3ds is just too damn small. Can't see how anyone with decently sized hands can even play on it.
