Sometimes it feels like the internet has become a haven for the delusional and the insane. When anyone and everyone is given a megaphone, ignorance and misinformation can drown out reason. You can find any type of echo chamber you want online and thrive inside it, however much it detaches you from reality. Just gotta play the long game for them to eventually die out, I guess, and fight the good fight in the meantime...

Well, I think these people always exist and the Internet just makes them more visible.

At least those silly enough to believe that the Earth is flat and those kind of things don't make any physical harm to others.

But I do have a problem with those that spread shit that does harm to others, like those who claim that vaccines are bad. Two kids died here in Spain last year becuase their parents were stupid enough to believe that shit and they didn't vaccinate their children.

Those kind of people are disgusting and should be accused and send to jail, like those that run sites about anorexia and bulimia.

He is the main reason for Vaccine-skepticism. In my eyes a mass-murderer of children.

That guy should be in jail imho. I'm sorry, but such an irresponsibility must be punished. Some people believe his arguments, and that lead to some fatal diseases in kids. What's worse than that?

Is there a different word that describes the following?

An idiotdoltdullard or (archaically) mome is a person perceived to be lacking intelligence, or someone who acts in a self-defeating or significantly counterproductive way.

You just don't want to become Rol.

On a similar note, I like "mome." I think I'll use that now, thanks for the options.

That was my thought. But as I'm not a native english-speaking person I probably should be cautious about such words. But I like the idea to call someone a moron with an old-style word. "These fucking momes are the reason we cannot have nice things!"

Let people believe what they want. I say live and let live.

Don't forget: Science has been wrong about a ton of stuff as well.  People have died because of scientific beliefs that turned out to be untrue.

There are no beliefs in science. If you take some theory for granted, that's your own fault. Facts are facts. A fact can never be wrong, because that would contradict the very definition of a fact.

Well, facts in itself are also useless: My thermometer show 20 degrees Celsius, but I don't know which temperature is there. Because I know measure instruments can show wrong values.

The moon is a projection made from earth.

Lol, I'd love to see someone then explain how we can also see the moon during daytime.

Well, you can project in daylight. But the moon shows always the same side, how should this happen if it is NOT a projection? Hmm, explain that!

This. Science has brought us many great advances in medicine and technology, but that doesn't mean it's infallible.  And it's just as dangerous  as any extreme religion when people make it their religion and want to persecute those who do not believe as they do.  Either by throwing them in jail or putting them to death.

In Spain school is mandatory until age 16, but I don't know if parents are send to prision for not bringing their games to school.

Yeah, never heard any parents going to jail here over something like that, but technically that's the law, so everyone sends their kids to school till then whether they want to or not.

Certainly happened here and there in Germany. 6 month in prison is the maximum punishment.

The internet wasn't really what we were told it would be. For every good thing it has given this world, just as many bad things have come with it as well. The ability for charismatic nut jobs to influence the average human being, who's IQ is not up to snuff and able to sniff out a con-job, is there now. It works like a digital flute whereby millions of people are able to be led off a cliff of lies and misinformation. I really don't know how to fix the problem without taking everything off the grid.

I know personally, if some super hacker group DOES take us back to the pre-internet days, I won't cry over it. Way too many digusting things will be gone for me to care about the few good things I'd be losing.

I'm with ya on that one.  I wish there was a different version of the internet that was for business and nothing else.  You could pay your bills online, shop online, maybe there would be an email service too, but that's it.

But at the end of the day it wouldn't change anything.  If there were no internet they'd come to your door.  People are always going to find ways to manipulate the masses, just like they have since the dawn of man.

There is such a version as this.  It's called self control.  The internet is just a tool.  You are the one who uses it how you wish.

That's good to know. Vaccines are even more important so here's hoping goverments implement similar measures against people who refuse to do them.

You would need a... very powerful projector, to say the least.
