Forums - Gaming - E3 2017: Indies 'Less Relevant Now,' Says PlayStation's Jim Ryan

The only reason Microsoft started to treat indies good was when Sony did, same with Nintendo. Indies have gotten so successful on consoles BECAUSE of Sony. That's why the PS4 has the most indies. And even then, Sony still treats indies good, they give them so much marketing on Twitter/YouTube.

The Xbox live Arcade had some of the best indies last gen.

yeah and they also restricted indies with the "launch parity" shit and I think having all indies require a publisher I think, which doesn't really make sense since an indie means independant.

They're definitely less relevant to Sony from a marketing stand point, which seems to be what he's referring to. Back in 2013 - 2014 the PS4's library was still somewhat limited, so it made sense to shine a lot of light on the great indies coming their way. Now that that they have plenty of exclusives under their belt, they hgave VR to promote, and the 3rd party game making machine is chugging along, there's less reason to shine that light on indies. They still want them, and PS4 owners are still buying them, they just don't need to put them enter stage. In that respect they are "less relevant".

clearly saying it's less relevant in terms of being part of the E3 showcase

funny to see MS jumping on this, they only gave a shit about indies when Sony got praise

but when you desperately need a win, no matter how small...

That's the case if you conveniently ignore that MS started the whole indie renaissance with the X360.

but then they dropped the support (like wth first party) towards the end of that gen and became famously difficult to deal with. They only loosened up again a year or so into this gen when Sony was getting praise

Yea but still XBLA is what made indies so successful on consoles .

Since 2013 I was never the indie lover and sure they could had extended the show for 40 minutes to show Knack 2, GTS, severous Indies and etc if they have done the analysis of their metrics and Indies didn't had a great impact after 2013 I see why they would skip them.

no as I just said, it actually wasn't, it was Sony's E3 2013 with all those indies shown. And you can obviously see that when you look at Microsoft's E3 2017 which was pretty much 3rd parties and Timed Exclusives (the indies). And Microsoft also got rid of the "Requiring a Publisher" rule too after that.

Click bait title.

It was just good to talk about in 2013/2014. It is less relevant now. We have VR to talk about now, for example.

Cherry picking I see. Where is the full interview where he explains why they indies on stage to get the message across that they are supporting indies. Quotes like this are missed "There was a time and a place, in the early stages of the life of PS4, to make statements. It was more about making a statement that we are serious about the indies, and that we are doing this and that with the indies."

Sony support indies in many other ways and they had a different focus at this years E3. Jim has said some stupid things but this is just taken out of context.

You are right but change X360 for OG Xbox. PopCap was the biggest indie supporter of XBLA at the time with Bejeweled, Zuma and Feeding Frenzy in 2004.
