Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Industry Is Stronger When Nintendo Is Strong, Says Sony's Jim Ryan

It's been quite a hectic 6 months for Nintendo. Coming off the back of the commercial failure of the Wii U, the company has been propelled forward by the incredible success of the Switch, which is selling like hot cakes all over the world.

You might assume that Nintendo's resurgence would cause rivals like Sony a bit of a headache, but the official line from PlayStation global sales and marketing head Jim Ryan is that it's good news for the industry.

Speaking to Game Reactor at E3, Ryan stated that he's glad to see a "strong" Nintendo because that means the industry is stronger as a result:

Jim Ryan: I think in many ways this increased presence in the space is a good thing; it creates conversation, it creates excitement, and certainly having a rejuvenated and energetic Nintendo back, I think it's a great thing for the industry, because...

Game Reactor: ...[it's] been a couple quiet years...

Jim Ryan: Yeah, it has. I think the industry is better and stronger when Nintendo is strong.

Certainly, out of Nintendo's two rivals Sony has the least to lose in the battle against the Switch. The company's PS4 is the best-selling console of this hardware generation and has sold almost twice as many units as the Xbox One. Sony has previously stated that it expects gamers to purchase a PS4 and a Switch - an ironic repeat of the "Wii60" era when the Xbox 360 enjoyed dominance over the PS3.

He's been spewing a lot of nonsense lately.lol

Jim is correct.

I hope people know that this is all PR to discredit the competition. Behind the scenes Nintendo and Sony are both planning on how to annihilate each other. They hate each other.

Tag:I'm not bias towards Nintendo. You just think that way (Admin note - it's "biased".  Not "bias")
(killeryoshis note - Who put that there ?)
Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

"Wii60" era? How does a writer for a video-game publication not know that the PS3 regularly outsold the 360?

wii60 was a real thing back then, do a research and you will see that wii60 was "the perfect combination"

"why should I buy a ps3 when I can buy a wii and a 360 for that kind of money!?" that's wii60.

He has !!

but on this he might be right also the switch is something that interests people who would generally play games on their phone or tablet and buying full blown retail games is good for the industry where as smartphone etc small games hold the AAA industry back because developers shift to where the profit is

So a strong nintendo IS good right now.
