Forums - Nintendo - Regginator: 3DS Will Be Supported Past 2018

http://ca.ign.com/articles/2017/06/15/e3-2017-nintendo-will-support-3ds-beyond-2018

The other major pillar of Nintendo's support is, of course, supporting its handheld with games.

"We’re going to continue to bring new content, and that’s what’s going to keep this device vibrant and keep it going well into 2018 and beyond."

Fils-Aime made it clear that though the Nintendo Switch is a portable console, it is a home console and not a replacement for what Nintendo wants to accomplish with the 3DS and 2DS.

We say that it’s a home console that you take with you and play with anyone, anywhere, anytime. It really is meant to deliver that great home console performance, you just happen to be able to undock it and take it with you, which is a key innovation," Fils-Aime said. "But look, in the end, what we want is we want the consumer to call it their device, right? Their preferred gaming device that they can play fantastic Zelda, Mario, third-party content, all of their favorite franchises brought to life on the platform. That’s what we want. And we’re greedy and we want Nintendo 3DS right alongside it."

Yup! At least 75-80 million is definitely more than possible! I can only imagine how cheap taht even the higher end models of the 3DS will be by 2019 too!

Exactly how much further "beyond" can they go with the system at this point?
Don't get me wrong, I love my 3DS.
But they gotta move on at some point.

Thats bad news..... Nitnendo need to get with the whole "unified" platform thingy they where saying earlier on.

I bet this means year 2, nintendo switch software output drops, and in year 3 theres droughts for the switch like the Wii U had.

Unless Nintendo Switch sales kick off like the Wii.

This bugs me, I hope Reggie is wrong or lying.

As long as that just means remakes and small spin-offs like we've seen, that's okay enough. However, if they ever plan to seriously support or create another successor to the 3DS then it'll only confirm their sheer stupidity.

This seriously bugs me.
How is this any differnt than the Wii U + 3DS situation then?

What was all that crap nitnendo was saying about 1 unified platform?
If the Nintendo Switch sales slow down, in year 2, does that mean it ll get game droughts too?

The 3DS has no competition, so it's possible.

no need to worry about Switch if you look at what we already know about it's lineup and what is actually being released on 3DS.

Switch is already infinitely more popular than the Wii U ever was, Nintendo have been much better at keeping the momentum going and getting the big games out early. And we already know that the biggest names like Pokemon and Metroid are going to be on the system, and not just spin offs, proper mainline games.

If you look at what Nintendo announced recently as support for the 3DS, it's a Metroid remake, Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon, which isn't exactly going to be taxing for the devs, and another Mario and Luigi RPG, which would be nice to get on Switch (and the next one will be I'm sure), but it's not a massive miss for the system.

3DS support from Nintendo will be the odd middle-tier franchise and remakes/ports, and won't affect the Switch much at all. All the best shit will be in the new console

Eventually, they will refresh the 3ds/2ds so many times until they reach 150 million that it will basically turn into the switch and thus will resell the Switch hardware as a rebranded 3ds and the Switch it's self will be as powerful as the ps4.

I don't believe Nintendo ever mentioning the Switch being its 1 platform going forward, more so that the media and gamers believed it to be because of the portability of the console. Nintendo 3DS was a pillar, just like the Switch, Mobile games, and at a time the Wii U. It's too early to call the Switch a huge success even with it selling out everywhere until its shown the sales of the console has lasting power. Also as seen with at E3 it showed where Nintendo's priorities are, with the Switch taking all the Spotlight and the 3DS relegated to Treehouse events.

As long as the 3DS continues to sell, they will continue to make games for it. Look at how long the PS2 lasted for because of the same reason (it still was selling). Mostly due to its huge user base will games still be created. Until the sales of the console start getting into late-Wii U of maybe a hundred or thousand a week at most. Nintendo will likely continue to make games for it.
