So far it seems to be that way. Hopefully the sales stay stable or else the games wont come.

There was a really good time on 3ds, around the time of Mario Kart 7, Mario 3d land and Animal Crossing New Leaf.
But probably yes.

I am fully convinced that the unified library decision was one of the best Nintendo has made. |
It would be, if they actually did it. So far they're not.

You dont think core Pokemon all but confirms that this is the case for the future...?
They are still supporting the 3DS. I mean, the platform is not dead. But we're getting there.

It's a process. Although I know what you mean. They should at least release all of their 3DS titles also on the Switch. Or at least the main ones, like Pokemon Sun and Moon 2 and Metroid: Samus Returns. But the 3DS likely only has a year left. If they show it next year, Pokemon Switch will probably its death knell.

So far though they're not unifying. They're keeping their userbase split by putting out games on two different platforms.
It's pretty good, but NES + SNES even N64 era in a lot of ways >>>> today. This is better than the Wii or Wii U eras though.
We didn't know how good we had it in the 90s/early 2000s ... like people complain like crazy about E3 2003 because Miyamoto showed Pac-Man VS. (lol), but that show still had Mario Kart: Double Dash, Resident Evil 4, Link In Soul Calibur 2, Final Fantasy: CC, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, F-Zero GX, Metroid: Zero Mission for GBA ... I imagine Nintendo fans today would be over the moon with a show like that.
My fav Nintendo eras were n64, GameCube and gameboy advance. Looks like Switch will be my next fav Nintendo era.

"in a long time?" The NES and SNES released before I was born. I was three years old when the N64 released.
To answer the topic question though, I would say that 2017 is the best year to be a Nintendo gamer since 2010.
