BotW slaying TP by so much shows also how much more accepted by gamers the Switch is compared to the Wii back in the day imo

It doesn't.

All it shows is that Breath of the Wild does a much better job at meeting the market's expectations for Zelda. In BotW you have freedom from the get-go, in TP you went through a slow start and fetch quests.

If you make a superficial sales analysis like you did (a.k.a. cherry-picking), it can be easily argued that Wii was much more accepted by gamers than Switch, because Wii had million-selling third party games faster (obviously only refering to game types that fall into the category of "accepted by gamers" without a doubt).

May I ask you what games you are talking about?

Because as far as I know, it took the Wii over a year to get it's first third party million sellers, and Switch ain't that old yet

Red Steel and Resident Evil 4 immediately come to mind. I don't think giving Switch another six months would change anything, because no third party game is close to passing one million yet.

More importantly though, that only served as an example of cherry-picking facts to support a desired conclusion, so don't approach this from an angle of determining which console was more accepted by gamers. What counts as a gamer already comes with subjective interpretations and what counts as evidence also comes with subjectivity.

My real stance on this matter is that such a question only exists in the first place because a group of disgruntled third parties and gamers couldn't stomach the Wii success and were looking for anything to diminish its success. So the biggest change I see between Wii and Switch is that the Sony console that is on the market at the same time isn't getting its ass kicked, therefore there is less of a need to lash out at Nintendo which in turn creates a more favorable perception of Switch, because it doesn't have to deal with the bullshit that was thrown at the Wii.

Ubisoft announced one million sold only by end of 2010 for Red Steel. Can't count this as an example.

Resident Evil 4 was a huge hit and the other consoles (save the PS2) didn't have their version at that time yet. That's as if DOOM wouldn't come out on the PS4/XBO until 2019

With examples like this, it looks more like you are either cherrypicking or remembering some things slightly wrong. Btw the first third party game on the Wii to break over 1M sales was Guitar Hero 3, followed by Sonic And The Secret Rings and RE4. Had you picked the first two out of the three here, and I would have accepted that argument without any fuss.

About my "desired conclusion", frankly wtf? Eine schamlose, rüpelhafte Unterstellung nenn ich das.

Both Zeldas got very highly praised by gamers and press alike (basically same level, though TP suffered years later, but not at launch), and both consoles sold about the same until week 45 as far as we know right now. So what is the reason for you that BotW is selling so much better than TP? I thought it would be because less of the console buyers where previously non-gamers and thus a higher portion of the console holders would be interested in some more complex games like Zelda than it was with the Wii

Updated with weeks 41 and 42!

Zelda BotW is a full 2m ahead of Zelda TP now! And the gap will only grow in the next 2 weeks (christmas).

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

BotW is going to become the best Zelda seller.
So good.

Thank you for your work :) I took the data and made two graphs out of it. Hope that is ok with you.

Pretty insane how BotW is just getting more and more ahead of TP.

Great work man, love your graphics!

Updated with week 43!

The gap is around 2.5m in favor of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild!

There's only 10 more weeks to go before they're both 1 year old! I believe the gap should be over 3m at that point.

Zelda will make insane numbers lifetime. It will do well till the Switch dies.
It will easily surpass 10 million in less than 2 years. It will get some bumps once new Zelda games come out.

Anyway, just really glad Zelda is doing so well and its not only a good sign for the franchise but for every core Nintendo franchise. I think Nintendi doesn't have to fear using new ideas and new franchises anymore with how easily they can market a game on Switch.

I think we will see more bold moves from them during Switch lifetime. Like even Arms is passed 1.5 millions by now this is maybe little compare to juggernauts but for a new fighting franchise with new gameplay, that's huge.

Its showing good news for Metroid Prime 4 and Bayo 3 and hopefully more hardcore and mature games like this. Would love to have a more dark atmosphere Zelda game for the next one.

My thoughts exactly. it will easily surpass 10m this year combined. And I also want a darker, more sinister Zelda next time. As much as I loved BotW's style, I loved the creepiness of Majora's and Twilight so much that I'd like to see that again next time. It would be glorious, and I think now the time is right for it: they're now are familiar with HD development and huge open world development, and Switch is decently more powerful than Wii U, which was already able to run a beautiful and complex game like BotW.  So I think they can pull it nicely.
