No matter how good something is, give it to 100 people and chances are 1 or 2 of them will feel differently to the general consensus of that group. They might not hate it, but they likewise might not think it's the greatest thing ever. Expand that to millions, and you end up with a lot of people feeling that way. If TLOU2, RDR2, and SMO all get 90+ scores, they'll all get similar comments. |
Which is awesome, in my opinion. It would suck if we all liked the same thing. Speaking as someone who likes a bunch of flawed games and dislikes a lot of the mega-franchises, I never want to see quirky content fade away in favor of trying to nail down perfect formulas.

For Persona at least, I have seen some people questioning why it's popular.
But yeah, sales are definitely a factor. Less people playing it means less chance of people that don't like it playing it. Also means less chance of those people that don't like it constantly having it thrown in their face. Much easier to call a game overrated and say it's not good when people are constantly bombarding you with "this is the best game ever! you need to play it right now" compared to a game that you haven't even heard of

Whenever a new Final Fantasy game comes out, I always say that it's time for millions of people who don't play Japanese RPGs to buy a Japanese RPG and then complain about Japanese RPGs.
That's the price of massive sales. I'm sure Square will gladly take that trade-off.
On the other hand, most of the people who buy a game like Persona like games like Persona.
