Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Discontinues The NES Classic Edition

I wonder if Nintendo could pull this off ...

Take the Tegra X1 (Switch chip)

Sell it basically inside a NES, SNES, N64 mini-casing (your choice) with a bunch of ROMS for $149.99 by this holiday season or next year some time.

It could also then naturally play Switch software too if the user purchased a set of Joycons.

NES Mini had great value for just $60. Thats price of one AAA game, and Nintendo is charging $5 for one NES game (so 30x$5 is $150), but with NES Mini you had 30 games and hardware for just $60. They will also most likly charging $5 for one NES game on Switch VC also.

In any case, NES Mini was more used like marketing tool.

More like they had fuck all for the holidays, so they made the NES Mini.

Like someone said already, I don't buy the piracy reason. I can get all of those games in my cell phone/pc in less than 20 minutes

To be fair Wii U was already dead and they had only 3DS.

Yes, so they made the NES Mini to hold them over until the release of the Switch.

Hey Nintendo, gonna do the same with the Switch too? Jesus Christ Nintendo makes some of the most horrible decisions out of any of the big 3 e~e

NES Mini is niche ($60) product of Nintendo and actually was mostly used like marketing tool, Switch is main product of company. Those things cant really compare.

Dude, the mini ain't fucking niche. It's always sold out. It sells amazingly, no reason to discontinue it

NES Mini Version 2.0

Controller w/longer cord
40 games total (10 more ROMS)

Only $99.99! (aka: we should have charged this much all along, we just had no fucking idea you were so crazy about 80s/90s nostalgia).

Nintendo honestly I don't think really understands in a lot of ways what the NES and SNES mean to a lot of people. Even N64 has crazy nostalgia with a lot of people. Nintendo I don't think gets it. I mean they know those are popular classic systems with games people enjoy, but I don't think they have quite the exact idea of how much it means to people growing up at that time.

I have about 5-6 friends that wanted an NES Mini and basically just gave up trying to find one.

They probably know it very well. Why else would they make us buy them again every time they release a new console?

I think they're aware that they're popular sure, but I don't think they quite grasp the cultural zietgeist they were for their time. Nintendo is kinda clueless that way, they are a bunch of old Japanese farts sitting in business suits all day.

They can't quite see things from the POV of someone growing up in say North America and what the music scene was like at that time, what the TV/movie scene was like, and how the NES came along and what that meant to someone who was 10, 11, 12 years old, and what those memories mean to someone when they are 30+ years old now.

I don't think Nintendo "gets" that part of it. You had to be there and you had to be a kid to understand what those systems (NES-N64 in particular) mean to a generation, and also I don't think Nintendo quite understands that retro = cool even to modern kids.

The Air Jordan XI or Air Jordan IV (shoes that are 20-30 years old today) are waaaaaaaaay more popular with kids than the current Air Jordan sneaker. Why? Because it's "cool" to have the classic model.
