M-rated metroid would be cool, OR a VR metroid

This is why people feel this way about it, Curl. I think maybe a M-rated Metroid could be cool. But the way it's presented here, it kinda sounds like wishing they made a M-rated Metroid just for the sake of making it M-rated. |
I don't imagine Curl wants them to do it for the sake of it, he just believes that a Metroid game built with the intention of being M-rated could potentially result in a different but still excellent game. Metroid presented with the unapologetic brutality of something like Bioshock could be interesting, and as he says, Nintendo's library is somewhat starved for that type of experience.

I should probably clarify; I'm not saying they should shove swearing and tits into it just for the sake of being M-rated, I'm simply saying they should more fully embrace the darkness and brutality already present in games like the Prime trilogy. Don't do anything tasteless or new, just protray the violence and creepiness that already exists with the greater detail and effectiveness that modern graphics and presentation allow.
I voted yes.
I wouldn't want sex or swearing or even excessive gore the first two don't feel like they have any place in the series. I would not mind a seriously fucked up story that sees Samus forced to make some serious lose-lose judgement calls. All that is of course assuming that game play comes first and a dark ass narrative comes second.
| curl-6 said: An M-rated Metroid is an excellent idea, it's a natural fit for the source material, which was always a dark sci-fi with horror vibes, heavily inspired by the film Alien. (Hence "Ridley" named after that film's director) Nintendo are sorely lacking in adult-oriented content and this would be a great way to bring some diversity to their lineup. Just keep Sakamoto the hell away from it and give it to a Western dev. |
To be fair, he WAS the one who directed Super Metroid and a few other great Metroid games. So maybe Other M was just a simple miss? Either way, I'd also rather have Metroid be developed by a western developer instead (preferably Retro).

Sex and blood not much, but Gore and a greater horror influence would be a welcome adition to the series. I should aliens with a plasma canon, nothing wrong with seeing that this hurts them.
Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

That's who I thought. That fucker should never, NEVER, touch a Nitnendo game again!! |
He was also one of the minds behind the original Metroid, and the director of Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion. If we are ever gonna get another great sidescrollng Metroid, chances are he will be behind it, or at least connected.
Anyway, to answer the topic: no, an m-rated Metroid game isn't really needed. The Prime games demonstrate that plenty can be done with a T rating, and I'm not sure adding gore or cursing will do much to add to Metroid, either atmospherically or mechanically.
That said, I wouldn't be against a Metroid game getting an M rating, so long as the resulting game is still great.

To be honest I wouldn't mind having a few Zero Suit missions. Put her out there in stealth-like situations akin to Zero Mission and utilize her super athleticism and intelligence. She's given these gifts of being super human so why not use them?
| curl-6 said: Slight rant, but it kind of annoys me the attitude a lot of Nintendo fans seem to have that M-rated = bad/immature. Some of the best games out there are M rated. An M rating allows games to explore themes, tones, and experiences you just can't get with an E or T rating. You couldn't have made Bioshock, Silent Hill, or Resident Evil 4 as great as they are without an M rating. And the lack of these kind of experiences on Nintendo platforms means a less diverse and more monotonous library, which is never a good thing. Variety is the spice of life.
Easy; it could enhance the feeling of dread and creepiness that already a cornerstone of the series. Games like Prime already have content that would probably get an M if rendered with the detail and realism of modern graphics. You wouldn't need to diverge from the franchise's established tropes at all. |
I guess I could agree with this and yes I did fall into the trap that M must mean unnecessary gore, sex, vulgarity etc. Then I googled Resident Evil 4 which is one of the best RE games ever created. It has a rating for "M" and it then made more sense.
However, I don't consider Metroid a horror game. It is much more of an action / adventure / puzzle game to me. I could see a Prime-esque game with greater detail on the alone-ness and creepiness of the environment. But I do not know if any of that would ever hit the need for an M rating. There is no realism portrayed in the shooting and death of enemies and it would never need to be overly violent. There certainly would never be sexual tones or vulgarity.
So, yes I could agree that a darker tone and theme would be a good addition to Metroid but that may not carry an M rating.
