sony waiting till 2020 isn't going to happen. its not like the old days where the whole architecture changed and old games cant be played on the new system. ms and sony already stated that they are looking at how apple releases models every year. ms and sony will release models every 2 years maximizing profits from high to low end customers. its a smart way to make $$$. looking at the pro is a perfect example of them milking the people that want better tech the same thing apple has been doing

Considering they need a console that is at least twice as powerful than a PS4 pro on all fronts and a CPU that's three times as powerful I would say 2020 is the first year such a system is affordable.

Sony don't need to care about powerful Scorpio because Sony make the games. Many games. Excellent games.

i agree . sony is destroying ms with exclusives . ms better have a good e3 if they want to stay in the market

Legit Leaks? Not before 2019.
Rumours from random people on Twitter? Next week.

PS5 launches probably in 2019. Scorp won't change that. The momentum is done. And i'm pretty sure MS actually knows this.

Scorpio is an experiment on multiple fronts. Testing how much they can optimize, which it looks like they have done beyond all expectations, closing the PC gap by more than any other console has since ever. Testing consumer demand for both incremental upgrades, testing demand for 4K (which I contend is definitely not a given. For instance, I wont upgrade to 4K for quite a long time even though I could if I wanted to). They are also testing profitability of releasing games for both their console and for their PC platform with relative parity. They are in fact pretty much the only company that _can_ do this.

Regardless of the outcome, I hope for the best as IMO it will make for a more competitive gaming market and gamers will benefit.

I think they will wait for even more technology 7nm or smaller transistors, a better stacked memory, 32 or 64gb, a generation or two after vega, etc.
The gerational power 8x jump on generations are not perceived as proportional to the visual jump, we need way, way more to justify a new generation these days.
People will compare to ps4 pro or scorpio, not to ps4. to handle a visual generational leap they have to go much over the traditional power leap.

meanwhile, a ps4 pro slim, a splimmer standard ps4, or even a portable/hybrid digital only 1080p screen ps4p.
I really cant see ps5 before 2021.

I completely agree with this. For a PS5, and a new generation they need a substantial leap over PS4. That won't happen at $399/$499 until they go below 7nm.

It makes much more sense to release a PS4 Premium around 2019 with 10 - 12 TFLOPS, with the same 8 core CPU running at 3GHz, with 12 - 16GB of RAM. This would be the prefect cap for the generation, giving us PS4/XBO games at 4K/60fps.

Like you mentioned a Slimmer PS4, and a PS4 Pro slim should happen. I think they should have a Digital only PS4 Super Slim that can eat into the streaming box market. They should be able to do a Digital Only PS4 on 7nm tech for $99 by 2020, modify it to support 4K videos services, and give it 512GB of SSD (which will be much cheaper than HDD by then), and they will have a great line up of home computing devices.

Then to top things off a portable PS4 with 4G or 5G would be a huge boost to the ecosystem. This would give them a way to get a number of their userbase engaged 24/7. I think this is the most important device they can deliver.

If MS can just keep their momentum they would be doing fine. Here's my logic, if they can sell an average of 8 million for 5 years in a row, that would give them a userbase at par with 360.

Sony is always gonna have a support edge given the larger userbase. But as long as Xbox One keeps getting great support and notable exclusives it should do fine.

On topic, I expect PS5 in 2020. It sounds nice for marketing reasons and any earlier would probably look bad.

Like with every console generation, works on new gen begin right after the current release, so they're already working on PS5 for some time now. But, I don't see them announcing it until PS4 sales start slowing down. It could be next year or in five years, who knows. Considering that they want this console be on the market for at least 6 years, the earliest time when we're going to hear about PS5 will be mid-late 2018 with 2019 release date. I know that Sony originally planned PS4 with ten years life span in mind, but we all know that's not going to happen as by that time PCs will be not one but two generations ahead and game developers will be pushing Sony for the new hardware a lot.
