Forums - Nintendo - Yooka-Laylee will see a Switch release “as soon as possible”, Playtonic wants to focus on developing own IP

Good to hear the Switch version will come soon. This game fits the platform perfectly.

It's exciting how one of the best and most versatile game studios in history is resurrected through independent and talented teams.

- Chris Sutherland's team (Banjo-Kazooie + Banjo-Tooie) -> Playtonic Games (Yooka-Laylee)
- David Doak's team (GoldenEye 007 + Perfect Dark) -> Free Radical Design (TimeSplitters) -> Dambuster Studios (Homefront)
- Chris Seavor's team (Con
ker's Bad Fur Day) -> Gory Detail Studio (The Unlikely Legend of Rusty Pup)
- Stamp
er Brothers' team (Battletoads + Donkey Kong Country + Jet Force Gemini) -> FortuneFish (That Bouncy Thing + Cat Logic)

Other key developers from the old Rare are also still part of the game industry:

- Gregg Mayles (Battletoads + Donkey Kong Country + Banjo-Kazooie) -> new Rare (Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts + Sea of Thieves)
- Ken Lobb (Killer Instinct) -> new Rare (Killer Instinct 2013)
Lee Schuneman (Diddy Kong Racing + Star Fox Adventures) -> Lift London (new IP)
- George Andreas (Donkey Kong 64) -> SIE London Studio (The Playroom + PlayStation VR Worlds)
- Martin Hollis (GoldenEye 007 + Perfect Dark) -> Zoonami (Go! Puzzle + Bonzai Barber)

Which makes it more BS that they only figured out 4 months before release (and after the Switch was revealed fully) that the Wii U couldn't handle the game. Don't get me wrong, I would rather have it on the Switch, but it "not being able to run" on the Wii U is BS. They Cancelled because of the Switch. Which is what they should have said.

Agreed. Wii U was treated like the red headed step child.

Going to just play devils advocate here... But the Wii-U is the red headed step child, and it's not just Playtonic who are treating it as such but Nintendo also are moving from that system asap, I'm not sure would anyone think that it was a good idea to continue supporting a very clear failure by anyone.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Mainly refering to how all these devs who had a KS and the Wii U versions were funded but ended up cancelled. Quite a few like that. Project Cars prob stung people the most as it was the most funded version. They promised how it was running so well on the system but then just up and cancelled it. So a lot of KS projects funded on Wii U then canned so some are pretty burned at this point. I even remember som indie dev claiming their 2D game which could run on a phone could not run on Wii U. So a lot of BS from devs.

The issue is that 1) they are crowd funded and much more beholden to those who supported it than other devs.  There are people who backed them FOR THE WII U VERSION.  And 2) they pretended it was still coming to Wii U until the 11th hour.  Shantae 1/2 Genie Hero came out on the Wii U despite it being basically dead and a Switch port being an easy out.  Cause they have some common decency and felt they should honor their promise to their backers.  You know, the people who funded them and made it possible to be indie in the first place.

The sooner, the better indeed. I'd love to have a physical copy as well, so I hope they release one.

I dislike them a lot. After that whole fiasco with them I don't really trust them. If they release a physical edition, I'll be buying used. If not, oh well. I'll miss out on a good game most likely. I can live with that though.

what fiasco?

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

I was really excited for Yooka-Laylee, but in light of Playtonic's actions, I'm most likely not buying it for any system anymore. They cancelled the Wii U version, the Switch version is a digital-only late port without a release date, and Super Mario Odyssey was announced two months ago, which makes Yooka-Laylee look like garbage in comparison. Not to mention the ridiculous fee for upgrading from a digital copy to a physical copy for Kickstarter backers, which means it's actually cheaper for non-backers to buy a physical copy. If they had either given the Switch a physical release, or at least released the digital version at the same time as the other consoles, I would have bought it.

Holy shit this infuriates me. It better not be that much of a late port because they'll be about to receive some angry emails.

I 100% agree.

I'm not buying this game, unless I find it ridiculously cheap.

God bless You.

I'm so disappointed with Playtonic honestly, still the game looks like is gonna be pretty good.
