Forums - Sony Discussion - Taiwan’s Newspaper Claims Sony is Working on a “Thinner” PS4

Well, Sony has always revised their consoles every year. Typically we get XXX-10XX at launch, then XXX-11XX the next year, followed by XXX-12XX, and so on until the XXX-20XX arrives which would have a different external design.

Perhapps, they are going to speed things up thanks to using more standard hardwre. There are so many options. PS4 Pro Slim, PS4 Slim Slim, PS4 Digital Edition (No BD Drive), PS4 Laptop/Tablet, even PS4 Handheld or Phone.

We are at a point where consoles should be updated yearly, and be available across a number of form factors. Then it should be up to the consumer, whether they want a $149.99 Digital only low end model, or a $999.99 every bell and whistle possible model. Do they want to upgrade yearly, every five years, maybe 10 years. Do they want to have just a portable unit that they can use as a replacement to their Smartphone, and also dock to the TV for lower spec gaming, or do they want to have a Phone, a Laptop, and a high end console, with a unified OS, for the best experience wherever they are?

The console business should be continuing to grow and expand, and Sony out of the three should be pushing the hardest. They are a hardware manufacturer, and PS4 is their only current product that is actually Sony through and through. They should be pushing for their own unified OS and storefront across all of their hardware.

Hopefully this turns out to be true. I would love a PS4 Pro with PSVR built in and UHD, then I could put last years in the bedroom. Then I would also like a PS4 Tablet, for browing the web or watching TV while my boyfriend plays NBA 2K. Most of all though, I would be doing backflips if a PS4 Phone was coming in the same design mindset as the Vita. Give me a Vita with L2/R2/L3/R4, and full access to PS4 software and services, and I would finally be able to shut up about hardware for the first time in 4 years.

Yes, I was waiting for that one. I hope the PS4 super slim arrives before Dragon Quest XI and Shenmue 3 and has a Pro chip.I still don't own a PS4 because there are no games for me, I'm kinda picky.

PS4 Pro Slim?

Perhaps the external hard drive from the last OS update would allow a far cheaper design. If they made a PS4 with the minimum memory needed, and allowed have a choice with external size.
.... but still, how could something like the PS4 which is really small now possibly get any smaller? The thing is already packed to the brim with high quality goodness.

Jk. We all have different tastes.

OT: If true it must be a PS4 Pro Slim. I don't think they're gonna trim the PS4 Slim again already. It seems too soon.

With the current 16nm tech in PS4 and Pro, the only ways they could make the console thinner without it sounding like an airport again is to either change the shell design (which they obviously don't want to do considering Pro follows similar design characteristics) or take out the optical drive and make it a digital only sku. With all the success PS4 is having, now is a smart time to try it and see what happens. With PS Now, soon to offer PS4 games as well, it would be a great way to get a feel for if this approach will work, and if so, what type and how many PS5 sku's will they need going forward?

PS could run with 4 sku's. PS4/Pro for physical media gamers, and PS4/Pro Slim for digital media gamers.

They could also potentially have the present 16nm APU's re-engineered on the newest "12nm" process, which apparently is not a full node shrink, but a worthwhile improvement to the present 16nm process. This may allow PS4 and Pro to shrink and become approx 20% thinner possibly?

PS could even do both. Shrink the APU (in turn shrinking the heatsink and power supply size) allowing for slimmer disc based consoles, as well as creating 2 more sku's without optical drives for an even slimmer model. These would either be cheaper in price or have more mass storage space built in.

A PS4P/Hybrid I could also see being possible. There was a lot of talk about NiN wanting to get Switch out asap, but not so soon that there were no games ready obviously. On one hand it makes business sense since its right in the middle of the PS4(slim), Pro launch and the Scorpio launch, but I have to wonder if maybe PS has something else cooking in the hardware department that has NiN worried. Hence the possible rush to market for Switch. With NiN hyping E3 and all the games that will be shown, and the fact that MS will be showing Scorpio and new games, PS will need something truly exceptional this time to try and stand out from the crowd. Well if by chance PS was planning to surprise everyone with a PS4P/Hybrid announcement at E3, then if you were NiN, making sure Switch launched months in advance of that would be a MUST.

A PS4P (Phone) could also be a possibility. PS4 branded tablet or laptop, sure. PS has many potential paths forward, and with the home consoles selling themselves right now, branching out is just as much a possibility as doubling down on the present hardware.

Either way I'm pumped for E3. This year is going to be comparable to 2013, if not better.

PS4 Pro slim with UHD drive to compete in the holiday against Scorpio, makes perfect sense.
God of War and Gran Turismo will push some sales for sure, smaller APU will also reduce production costs

This has got to be it.  I really don't see why, or even how, they would try to put out an even slimmer OG PS4.  I'm guessing a Pro closer to the size of the OG PS4, maybe lowering the power draw slightly.  UHD isn't 100% necessary, as they are still niche, but it would still be a welcome addition.  I mean, they're revising it, anyway, might as well.

I wonder if this is the reason they haven't worried about getting more stock of the Pro out.  It's constantly selling out online, including Walmart and Amazon.  Possibly they are working on a slimmer version to cut down production costs and they are having a soft relaunch closer to the holiday season at $299, with the Slim dropping to $199, and advertising focusing more on the Pro.  I think that should be more than enough to combat the Scorpio.  Especially if it's launching for $399+.  Personally, I'm expecting it to launch for $449, so that $150 difference is going to be huge.

OT: A slimmer PS4 Pro would be nice for me as I skipped the original Pro. Would be weird to make another PS4 Slim so soon.

Sorry, but you shouldn't be j/k.  If the PS4 has no games to offer someone, they are either a fanboy or are lying.  Not saying that those games are enough to push you to drop $250-$300 on one, but it's not possible for there to be nothing for any gamer.  Every genre is represented with at least 2-5 games of good/great quality.

They will gain fuck all sales by including a UHD player.  Completely unnecessary to include such a niche feature.  However they will make many millions less in profit.

OT:

This is obvious.  Both a ps4 pro slim and a ps4 super slim are to be expected.  Super slim to be sold @199 and pro slim to be sold at 299.

Nobody will compete in the console sphere with prices like that.
