Forums - Nintendo - Is Breath of the Wild really that good?

From the videos I've seen, graphically it doesnt look that good, and not seen any gameplay that would make me think that its any different from any other open world game.

I think this will be the first game my son will get with the Switch when he gets one, so I'll check it out, but it looks quite an empty dull world.

I have the Platinum trophy on an open world game that really is an empty dull world, Mad Max. That world is a dull empty wasteland and it's a gorgeous vision of the apocalypse. Just saying....

Hey! They got SONY on my amiibo! Wait a minute. Two great gaming tastes that game great together!

Oh dont get me started on Mad Max :) man that is the most interesting boring game I've ever played. Love the setting, the game is sooooo tedious. How did you get platinum, I've got most, but as all of the roads etc are taken over I dont think I can complete the 100% of all challenges :(

So yes I appreciate not all open world games are made equal, Mad Max is definately one of the worst I've played (and in a sick kind of way I enjoyed it)... its so repetative.

The non-recurring challenges trophy made a lot of people give up trying to Platinum the game. It was tough.

It's ok, 8/10 for me. Disappointing Zelda game, but good open world physic-based game.

I second this!

For me, it's the best game I've ever played, by far. I am actually actively avoiding progressing the story just to spend more time doing random exploration, hunting and fighting.

I've always loved the Zelda series, but I felt that with Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword the series had stagnated and it was losing some of it's magic, even tho they were still really good games.

BotW just completely upends the tea table, as Miyamoto would put it. Nintendo was not afraid to throw away most of the old gameplay mechanics and many of the conventions of the series; which has made it in to a much better game.

I was worried that the nonlinearity would be superficial and not really there, but more like a hidden linearity, but after playing for 30 hours I can truly say that is not the case, you really can go do anything you like at almost any time.

Almost all puzzles I've encountered can be solved in multiple ways, because there is no scripted events, only a physics engine, which doesn't put any artificial restrictions on you.

The mood is amazing, the sense of freedom and adventure from Zelda 1 has been recaptured.

My main concern now is how is Nintendo going to take the Zelda franchise further from this point?

What parts did you found dissapointing? My wild guesses are dungeons, bosses and story.

In other words core of Zelda games.

I was not very exited about the game at first but 5 discoveries upgraded my score so far:

1. Entering Hyrule castle early left a huge and very positive impact. Highly recommended.
2. There seem to be some very sad NPC backstories, Majora's Mask style. NPCs seem to have a life and react to the weather.
3. You seem to be able to upgrade and modify almost anything.
4. It is very Zelda-like and offers more (hidden) Zelda content and Minigames then any Zelda before
5. Destroying a large Guardian before entering the first village felt amazing

This game creates the most detailed and most believable open world that I have ever seen. But it took me more than 30 hours to realize that.

I know this is an old post, but I wanna comment about the NPCs. They actually follow a routine. I followed the Sheika girl that lives with Impa for a day, and she has a tight schedule (clean the first floor, pray to the statues outside, write on her diary). If you talk to her in any different time or area, she has different things to say. She also reacts to the rain, and if you try to read her diary while she's in the room, she stops you.

Now think of all the NPCs on the game and how all of them also have a routine. And they all also react to you, the weather, and enemies around them...

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

I finished the game today.

There are a couple things that could have been better. Korok seeds are dumb and should not have been there at all, the Goron Divine Beast infiltration was very flat compared to the other amazing infiltrations, framerate was bad sometimes, and rain was annoying.

With that said, I loved the game. Absolute Masterpiece. Definitely my favorite Zelda game.
The soundtrack was fantastic. The gameplay and the combat and the difficulty was exciting and refreshing. The world was so cool, so interesting.

I am honestly glad they broke with Zelda traditions. This might not appease some fans, but it works for the better. This is a modern and fun Zelda that retains some cores but reinvents the franchise.

It is that good.

Honestly, Twilight Princess will probably feel ancient now compared to this game.
