Forums - Gaming - Most old games are terrible by todays standards.

In my personal experience, most old awesome 3d games are terrible by today's standards, but most old awesome 2d games remain awesome.

Nah, I don't think I can really argue, or perhaps I've just managed to play mostly good games myself. Either way, most old games I've played still hold up pretty well, but obviously not all do. Actually they hold up surprisingly well. But I can definitely see where you're coming from, because some games have aged terribly.

I can still play old games and enjoy them. I played FFVII and just platted it only a few weeks ago, i did notice that the framerate in battle was alot worse than i remembered but i still really enjoyed the game alot.

Good old 15 frames in the battle! :P

Ok, imo most old games put modern gaming to shame.

Well... you said "most" and I think anyone would argue with that. If you had said "all" we would have to argue. A lot.

There are games, even from the Atari era, that hold up well, but just if people trying them make the effort to clean their mind and understand the era when that game was launched.

It´s like watching an old movie.Movies like Limelight, Metropolis and Nosferatu are quaint compared to today´s movies, but if you understand the industry standards at the time they were launched, and how people used to appreciate movies back then, they can be quite enjoyable.

Games like Keystone Kappers on the Atari, Sonic on Genesis/MegaDrive, TMNT 3 and SMB3 on NES etc. have great gameplay and are quite enjoyable. We just need to be open-minded.

I know that saying "all" would be incorrect. However, the point I'm making is that to enjoy those old games you have to go in with "an open mind". I can quite safely say that there is not a single amazing game by todays standards on the Atari.

The words you use yourself "quite enjoyable", that's pretty much the best they can be, and even then you have to go in with "an open mind".

Super Mario World is perfection and still holds up (probably better than many PS1/PS2 era games etc... Weirdly enough SNES games aged much better than pre PS3/Wii era

I view games like this (use example of single system from each era) roughly

2D Gen 1   - Gen 2 - Gen 3
Atari 2600 - NES    - SNES

3D Gen 1 - Gen 2 - Gen 3 - Gen 4
PS1          - PS2     - PS3     - PS4

If there had been a "2D Gen 4" focus I think those games would have aged very well.

Tell that to Commandos (1998) fans, or Thief (1998) fans, or Grim Fandango (1998) fans, or Xenogears (1998) fans.. see what I'm getting at. Have fun playing your third person action games and first person military shooters.

^ this is true.

There are plenty of old games that still stand up by todays standards.

Others.... havnt aged as gracefully.

Pong (with paddles) is still an absolute blast and better multiplayer fun than a lot of today's games.

I loved Commandos in my school days, I also have recently gone back to it and it has not aged well. As much as I still have nostalgia for it just wouldn't be that enjoyable by someone who doesn't have that nostalgia. Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, just recently released, a game that is heavily inspired by games like Commandos (could even call it a rip-off), but ultimately improves the experience in every single way and makes it a great game by todays standards. Give Commandos and Shadow Tactics to 100 random people who have played neither and 99 of them will tell you that Shaow Tactics is more enjoyable.

This same thing applies to almost every old game. While sure there won't be as faithful modern games for every old game. The love of those old games are purely nostalgia driven. Sure I can't think of a game that 100% faithfully represents the original Thief games, but you know why? Because those games are not good by todays standards. Their mechanics are outdated and generally not enjoyable. While not the same gameplay mechanics most modern stealth games will give a more enjoyable experience than the original Thief games ever could.

Grim Fandango, while a charming game with a great atmosphere and characters, the gameplay is awful by todays standards. Give that game to someone today and tell them to beat it without a walkthrough with it's moon logic puzzles. They will get frustrated and go play something more enjoyable instead.

I could go on with this for almost every game. There are so few old games that actually are an amazing experience by todays standards and don't have a better modern alternative.

So much wrong in your post.. Commandos is timeless, it looks and plays even better today than in 1998 because at 1080p on a widescreen monitor you see the whole map unlike on a 17 inch CRT monitor in 1998.

How you sh*t on Thief is blasphemy. Thief has the best sound design to this date, which is crucial in stealth. NewDark, fanmade patch, is regularly updated and makes Thief look like a modern game. New fan missions are being made and released almost 20 years after, if you don't believe check ttlg

Grim Fandango gameplay is extremely annoying classic adventure point and click mess and waste of time, that is the only thing I agree with.
