Most old games are terrible by todays standards.

I view games like this (use example of single system from each era) roughly

2D Gen 1   - Gen 2 - Gen 3
Atari 2600 - NES    - SNES

3D Gen 1 - Gen 2 - Gen 3 - Gen 4
PS1          - PS2     - PS3     - PS4

If there had been a "2D Gen 4" focus I think those games would have aged very well.
