Forums - Gaming Discussion - I know why the Switch Pro controller is so expensive

Nah it's definitely because they know people even those who don't do multiplayer (like me) are gonna want it since it's superior to the Joy Cons, unlike on the Wii U where the game pad and pro controller were virtually the same, yeah that's probably it!

Around the Network

I would take out the HD rumble, motion controls, and replace them with analog triggers, a headphone jack, and bluetooth connectivity, just saying.

edit: still 10 dollars too overpriced imo. PS4 controller has touchpad, speaker, and lightbar, things that Switch controller doesn't have.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

Fixed that for you :)

Several questions.

1) What makes it superior? Other than the fact the Joycons don't have one at all.

and 2) how can you say "more" features when it doesn't have the same features as the ps4.

The ability to use amiibos is not an impressive feature. I'd argue it isn't even a feature at all. It is a requirement for the Amiibos - but in no way shape for form improves the gameplay or the controller in any way.

While not even having headphones like the ps4/xbx1 did FOUR years ago - is saddening.

The same goes for having digital triggers instead of analog triggers.

The ps4 has a light bar that while I wish could be turned off, does have features and usages. Not to mention it has a speaker in the controller as well.

3) And isn'ts the argument of "it is 40 hours" the opposite of "who cares it doesn't have a joy con charging grip - who plays that long anyways?". No one is going to play 40 hours without charging - thus a battery that size is irrelavent.

A 4 hour battery life is pathetic for a controller. And I think I know what I'm talking about, considering it annoyed me greatly with the Wii U gamepad.

The DS4 controller is filled with stuff no developer ever uses. Why can't I use gyro assisted aiming like in Splatoon while playing FPS or TPS on the PS4? The light bar is just annoying and drains the battery faster (and barely any developer makes use of it in a good way). The touchpad is also very underutilized. The DS4 is a bigger gimmick controller than the Wii motion controller ever was. At least the wii motes made use of their technology in a meaningful way.

As for a speaker, the Wii motes had that as well, it wasn't exactly a big deal and I can easily live without that. It didn't add anything to the games.

And the ability to use amiibo might not be impressive for you, but many people buy amiibo and use it in their games. You also don't have to buy an expensive portal to play games like Skylanders: Imaginators.

Lol, but a lot of people already have USB-C charging cables :p

You get it, right? USB-C is still pretty new, cables do sell for 10 or up in shops (not in China :P).
Back when the extra controllers of Sony and Microsoft released, they didn't even include a cheap micro usb cable on it.
A quick search and you see a few Sony fans whining about it (linked one in the OP)

For the xbox one, didn't find any complaints, just a mention in the IGN wiki:
http://www.ign.com/wikis/xbox-one/Xbox_One_Controller
And back then the WiiU pro came with a mini usb cable.

Joke or no joke, it's pretty nice of greedy Nintendo to at least include a usb-c.

Mine last about 7 hours. With the average being about 6 hours.

The reason it doesn't matter? I don't play 6 hours in a row. Heck I don't play 4 hours in a row.

It is the same reason I have no problem with the switches battery. I have no problem with Zelda only last 3 hours in portable mode -because I don't play that long in a row.

When I'm done playing? I plug it in. Thus 4 is as good as 40.

Then again I don't know why I ever bother responding to you. You are as cliche as it gets. "I don't care about that feature. I don't want that feature. Who cares about that game. I don't want that game. No one wants that game" etc etc etc.

Everything you like/want is good, everything else is bad. It is very one sided and absurd.  So I'm just going to ban you from any further(or is it father?) conversations with me.

Lol, if you don't have any real arguments don't bother responding.

All of the features you listed for the DS4 are heavily underutilized. Almost no game makes use of any of them, even Sony's first party titles. You're bragging about features that no developer makes use off. These list wars are pathetic tbh.

And I don't recharge my controller every time I'm done playing... Almost no one does that... My Wii U pro controller lasted me months of playing Mario Kart 8 before I had to recharge it...

Battery life matters a lot, especially for a console that can also function as a handheld (by the way, you're guilty about the cliché you try to accuse me off: "I don't care about a battery life, so who cares that the Switch Pro controller lasts 40 hours. I never play more than a couple of hours at once!". Hilarious lol.)

my ps4 controller i got for christmas didn't come with a charger

I think we can all agree that every company rips you off with the accessories, and not just in gaming.

That said it is probably a combination of the "HD rumble", "Amiibo scanning", "battery" and greed. Why do I include greed? Because there is no way that dock is $90. Thus if they would WIDELY overprice that, I'm be willing to say they would overprice anything.

I thought the dock price was high too, but USB-C hdmi docks which also charge aren't that cheap either.

Or whatever the light bar does.. vs the switch having nothing like it.

Light bar is to know which player you are, no? Pro has a player led display at the bottom of the controller

It's not really a construtive discussion. All current-gen controllers are terribly priced and the switch pro is possibly even worse.

Yeah eventually they snap and get banned, better to just let it go lol.

I think this was what I was trying to get at, in my artless, awkward way

Accessories are notorious for high mark-up, and all console makers are guilty. Before labeling the pro controller a rip-off or Nintendo a greedy, unscrupulous corporation, take a look at the competition. Sometimes we're a little blinded by our brand loyalty, myself included.
