Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Does It Really Matter How Much Switch Sells?

Does it matter on a profit level: not too much. It sells at a profit, so to make money back to Nintendo it doesn't need to sell like a 360 with dozens of software sales.

On a rep level it does matter, but given how console warriors go they won't mention it for 10 reasons, 8 of which have no merit or are just them being selective with their terminology.

"Rep" level is stupid anyway, pissing wars for insecure kids on message boards. Even if it does sell amazing, the PS4 is going to topple 100 million this gen pretty much no matter what now, so there can't be any "clear cut victory" in that sense either.

It only matters if it is your only gaming option. So no, it doesn't matter.

Even in that case though it doesn't matter really.

Developers are not some how going to go "well you know we're going to make GTAVI Switch exclusive because it's selling like the Wii" ... even if it sold like the Wii, which is unlikely, it still likely will never overtake the PS4/XB1 combined base, so developers have no choice but to focus on those platforms first.

It'll get Japanese games like Monster Hunter, Shin Megami Tensei, Yokai Watch, Dragon Quest, etc. sure ... but like it would get these games pretty much no matter what. It would have to flop full on to not get these games, 2/4 of these IP are already announced anyway for Switch and I'd say there's no chance in hell it doesn't get a Yokai Wach and Monster Hunter game.

So no, even if Switch is the only system you have, likely there isn't going to be a whole lot of difference for you if it sells 45 million versus 85 million or something. You're going to basically get the same games.

I'm talking more of a difference of 10m to 40m. I don't think it's a given yet that it will sell above 40m.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

It does matter. If the Switch were to sell like the Wii then Nintendo would steer the direction of the market again. Much like with Move and Kinect, PS and MS would have to react and that would effect PMS gamers in some sort of way.

However, that's if it were to sell like Wii; insanely fast start and all.

PS4/XB1 will still sell 170-180 million this generation likely no matter what, so no directional change in the market will really happen.

Even with the Wii, it sold 100 million but PS3 + 360 sold 165+ million which is basically the same as the PS2 + XBox, they just had a different split of the market between the two of them.

Yes it does. If it does poorly, people like Dr. Vita will celebrate and people like tbone will probably be eh about the whole thing. If it does well, the opposite will happen.

...
Now that I think about it, the two scenarios will probably play out the same.

Doesn't your second sentence kind of disprove your first? MS and PS don't care if their combined total exceeds that of Nintendo's, they individually would want to exceed Nintendo and therefore would have to come up with a solution to do so.

Absolutely, how much it sells does impact support and some developers could make it their focus.

It could sell 100 million even, and I don't think developers would make it their focus.

PS4/XB1 would be nearing 170-180 million between them and then you also factor in PC/Steam players ... the x86 consoles + PC are going to be the default platforms no matter what.

Nintendo will get Monster Hunter, Yokai Watch, Shin Megami Tensei, and the like ... but they are basically gaurunteed these games unless they fucked up so miserably this gen.

Yeah, it doesnt matter for this gen, of course. PS4 and one, pro and scorpio will probably be untouched.
But maybe for next consoles. If switch sells very fast, at PS4/wii levels and doesnt seem to decline and the tendency to easy play anywhere become mainstream for home console quality games, it can influence the decisions of next PS and xbox systems.
if then, sony could instead of focusing first in a PS5, could starting thinking in an hybrid PS4 in a few years. MS with its play anywhere as well.
But it is unlikely to switch sell that much for its price...

If sales dont matter, what matters to a game company then.
Of cause Nintendo wants to sell as many as possible, Kimishima expects the Switch to achieve Wii level of performance.
