So VR with PS1 visuals ?

It could easily do wii to maybe vita visuals but I don't think looking at its current peformance it could do 360/ps3/wii u visuals.

We don't know the refresh rate of the tablet it could be 70hz which is an entry level refresh rate for VR.

The Switch already has what can only be described as a limited range of upcoming titles (excluding low performance shovelware) and you wouldn't want to dilute this even more with VR title development.

could it run arms, splatoon, mk8, a swiitch sport?
well, suposelly, switch can run mk8 720@60 for 2 players split screen on a single switch. So, seems no problem for rendering the 2 eyes, with mk8 level of visuals at maximum rate of the screen...
But, would it be a experience comparable to oculus? i dont think so. but could be the most acessible vr on market.

Ohh, I forgot how that works. When talking about the refresh rate of two screens, you can just take the refresh rate of one screen and double it in order to get the refresh rate of the two combined. My bad. What Sony should have done with PSVR is have two screens instead of one, that way they could advertise a refresh rate of 180hz minimum, instead of the 90hz that reality gives us! Silly Sony!

Ignoring the fact that it was a joke, that device can produce 120 different images (frames) a second. For VR, one large screen split in half at 120 is the same as two screens at 60. In fact, given the increasing power and portability of smartphones, using 2 devices instead of one is probably the best route for VR.

Of course. Why buy one Nintendo Switch for VR when you can buy two in order for it to work at an acceptable level? That's brilliant.

Nintendo could easily make 1080p+ VR with the Switch tablet and mobile style googles with very minor tweaks. This probably has been mentioned before but, lets see it anyway...

The Patent:

The patent looks a lot like a mobile VR set. Seems like you just put the Switch tablet in it and watch the screen through special lenses that can only see half the screen each. Aside from the lenses, no special hardware is needed as the Switch tablet itself have the nessesary sensors and takes care of all the needed proccessing.

The Problem(s):

The Switch screen is limited to 720p. As the lenses can only see half the screen the resolution is pretty much halved. Except its worse. Much, much worse. Take a look:

As you can see in this high end mobile VR implementation, the images are warped and don't take the entirety of the screen. Screen space not used are pixels wasted. Besides if you look at the apertures, they seem smaller than the actual rendered image. Thats quite the stretch if you ask me.

The Solution:

The Patent.

1080p or better screen!

So um, just add a HD+ screen to the googles and send an HD+ signal from the Switch through its USB-C connector like with the dock. The screen on the Switch should be turned off and the googles can have extra batteries. Should also have a power connector too (duh). But full wireless could be a big advantage.

The googles would be more expensive than a Google cardboard because of the extra screen but the Switch have the sensors and takes care of the proccessing.

About the weight: The PS4 VR googles without cables weights 610g. The Switch tablet without Joycons weights 297g. The Switch VR googles can't weight more than 313g if it wants to be as confy as the PS4 VR.

Disclaimer: I'm not saying this is what Nintendo will do. Just a posible solution.

Depends on the Panel. If it's Pentile based you need a higher resolution to compensate due to how the subpixels are arranged.
720P will look terrible regardless of how you cut the cake though.

Besides, pretty sure the Switch base unit lacks the proper sensors for things like motion/tracking, you need the Joy Cons for that, which adds to the weight and bulk of a "VR" Switch.

According to the official specs, the Switch tablet have an accelerometer and gyroscope which are the nessesary sensors for VR. As long as you stay on a fixed position, that is. For tracking your position you need more stuff.

The more VR, the better (within reason, of course). So, I'm all for it. VR needs competition and innovation to drive the tech forward. I am hopeful that MS will do something VR related with Scorpio, and I'd be happy to see Nintendo, or anyone else, get into the game.
