Forums - Nintendo - Japanese devs shares thoughts about NS system.

It's interesting how all of them thinks the NS price is "cheap", or how VR it's possible, and HD rumble.

Probably because most Japanese developers will see the price from a handheld perspective instead of a home console perspective... the Switch for 40,000 Yen has a huge performance improvement compared to the Vita or the New 3DS XL (each around 20,000 Yen)

Not sure no. VAT as a whole is new to me. So when someone gives a price I can't tell if is pre or post VAT. So I just started assuming it was all post VAT.

Assuming pre tax. And a tax of 8(I was rounding to 10 to be simple) percent. It is 32378.4 yen. That is $281 us. Compared to $324 us.

So still a $43 dollar difference.

Yeah, that's the value I ninja'd.

In Europe the price difference is a pro controller, while in the US it's Puyo Puyo Tetris.

Amazon.fr is only €300 though.

Yeah, the price might just come down to €300 in general. Nintendo didn't set an RRP so retailers are trying to milk this product as much as possible. Amazon Germany is still sold out of Switch units so they kept the price at €330... hope that will change before launch. Lowering prices is always possible but raising them after people preordered is not an option.

On topic: I guess they know how much technology Nintendo stuffed into this thing and that's why they like the price. Compare the Switch to a 3DS or a Vita and then take into account that it comes with two controllers and a dock and the price seems pretty fair to me.

29,980 is the cost. I will assume that A) Japan uses VAT, and B) that is the value post VAT. This that is the final price point with tax included and everything.

That is $260 dollars US.

It cost $300 dollars US and that is pre tax. So around $330 or so post tax.

That is a $70 dollars difference.

Are you sure about that? Manuel mentioned the Switch prices in a store (I think it was Bic Camera) are marked without taxes.

Yay, I was mentioned!

29980 is the price before tax, as was pointed out already. 8% consumption tax comes on top of it.

After the tax hike many stores started to show their prices without tax, especially since there's a second hike planned and this way they can save on price labels? I don't really know. But without tax, prices just look cheaper, and I think that's what they're going for.

Why would I not mention you from another thread, if the topic in question is related?

8% is not that much, we pay around 20% in Europe ^^

"Is an HD Rumble novel possible? What kinds of images can we evoke from worlds depicted with just letters and vibrations? Fear induced by the rumbling. Suspense. I think it would be possible to create an overwhelmingly frightening game with it. Also, the feeling and weight of it. This is a little embarrassing, but I think it is a good fit for romance-themed visual noels as well. And just imagine how HD rumble controllers could enhance analogue games like Werewolf. I just can’t stop fantasizing about new and exciting uses/possibilities for it (laughs)."

That has me interested.

Yay as in happy. Not complaining. :)

Compared to Europe, sales tax is indeed low in Japan.

The only thing that i got out of reading all that is

They all think is cheap vs everyone on VGChartz thinking it isn't lol.

Well, some of them knows the tech inside the system, on vgchartz nobody has a clue about it, that's why they know it is cheap.

That's a pretty bold statement to make. Do you have evidence to support such a ludicrous claim?

AMD VR is crap compare with Nvidia VR so maybe it can give us a little surprise on that front.

Could you elaborate on why AMD's VR is crap?

The price issue isn't just the base console price.
Everything is expensive and they are throwing everything behind a pay wall.

I think the PSVita and the 3DS needs to die for the Switch to REALLY get that support. But of course, Nintendo needs to make the first move to bring the Nintendo fans on this.

I think the 3DS still has legs left in it still, the advantage with the 3DS is it's price, especially with the 2DS, it's more palatable for parents to buy 3x children a 2DS or 3DS for Christmas than it is a Switch each.

VAT is similar to Australia's GST, everthing by law has to include GST in the final advertised price.

For example, if the Xbox One is $250 AUD. That already includes the 10% GST... So you are actually paying $227.27 for the console with $22.73 GST.

Same thing happend when I bought a motherboard from Poland recently, they have a (stupid) 23% VAT tax and that was included in the final price.
So I would assume (I may be wrong) the same practice was world-wide and the USA, as usual was the exception to the rule. *Cough*Metric*Cough*

8% Tax on $300 would bring it down to $277.78 with the total tax being
$22.22.

It's disgusting! Haha. And different countries in the Eurozone have different VAT rates which confuses it even more, Hungary for instance has it at 27%.
Which is nuts in my eyes.

Our Government was "talking" about increasing our GST to 15% and the country scoffed at the idea.

We were talking about the price difference between Japan and other countries.

But the base package does include those expensive add-ons that makes single/co-op modes possible on the go or with the TV.

That's why Bandai Namco said:

The price is exactly what I’d expect from a marketing point of view, but if you count all the individual peripherals… The full thing is pretty cheap, and I say that as someone familiar with the inner workings of the system. I have no idea how they kept the price that low.
