After the tax hike many stores started to show their prices without tax, especially since there's a second hike planned and this way they can save on price labels? I don't really know. But without tax, prices just look cheaper, and I think that's what they're going for.

8% is not that much, we pay around 20% in Europe ^^

Compared to Europe, sales tax is indeed low in Japan.
