Forums - Gaming - Switch online requires Phone App? Why is no one talking about this?

When he says "the phone app is how you'll voice chat, do your matchmaking and create your lobby", it clearly indicates that the phone app is needed for that, which is consistent with every other announcement about it.

So it couldnt mean that on top of how you have always done it. There is another convenient way we I'm ded to do those things?

I don't think so. There is a difference between "We add a new additional possibility to do that" and "you'll do that like this". The second one doesn't evoke other possibilities, and Nintendo always used the second one so far every time they talked about their paid online, and didn't correct it even with a big backslash online.

Let's hope they'll change that before launch thanks to the bad reactions.

EDIT : You'll obviously be able to play online without that app, but apparently without your friends, without premade parties or handmade matchmaking, and without ingame chat.

Personally I think he is referring to you scheduling matches with other people. This app doesn't even launch until sometime in the summer. Is Splaton 2, Mario kart 8, Arms just not gonna have online multiplayer.

Yes. I think it can be an easy way to do some things.

I just dont see them doing it that way. So hopefully they either are wording it wrong or do change it.

What worries me the most is matchmaking being done thru a phone. So that means online, apart from being a paid service, will be strongly dependent on whether you have a smartphone or not. Unless you're able to matchmake thru the docked console, this doesn't seem like a reliable option, to be honest. And I want Nintendo to succeed with this.

This is 2017 for crying out loud.

That's probably why there's going to be an app for this. In 2017, everything must have an app.

Lol this! And how Every franchise needs to have a smartphone game! Easy money!

I always thought this was just an option. Or an added feature or something. But unless its some sort of massive mistake, Reggie just confirmed it as an "elegant solution" to aproblem that doesn't even exist.

The smart phone app that we’re creating, that will be part of our online service, we believe is going to be a very compelling part of the overall proposition because that’s how you’ll voice chat, that’s how you’ll do your matchmaking, and create your lobby. We also think it’s a very elegant solution because if you’ve taken your switch on the go, you’ve put yourself in a hotspot, you’re looking at get a quick match of Mario Kart in, to whip out some sort of bulky, gamer headset is a bit of a challenge.

So we think we’ve got an elegant solution. That’s a very specific answer to your question.

How is this even possible? Why???? So to game online on the switch you will need to have a smartphone? And this is an elegant solution? And don't forget, this online service i also a paid service.

I don't know, this coupled with the news that at launch the switch won't do netflix or youtube or have a browser.... the only thing i can think of is that they are doing this to keep the OS footprint as low as possible. so more of its available ram is left for games. And i honestly think that is a stretch.

This is 2017 for crying out loud.

Probably cause of its already low battery life. And like you said about its ram.

You dont have to. You can

It makes no sense for this to be the only option. Just wait for them to clarify
