I think they needed a new angle for Splatoon 2. Just throwing out gameplay footage with new hairstyles, weapons and maps gives a DLC feel since the graphics are so similar and the game is very likely reusing the same engine.
It just didn't have a big qualifiyer to set it apart from Splatoon. They should have thrown some single player and story bits in there.

The question is, will the fanbase keep playing once the online fee activates? |
If it declines drastically, hopefully Nintendo will reconsider it's online offerings and adjust it to get more people on the bandwagon.
Well, this is how most online shooters end up. Splatoon isn't the first shooter to look exactly like its previous version...
Very conviently, I was looking perusing chuggaconroy's twitter over his thoughts on Xenoblade 2 right before coming here.

This is part of the line just to get a *photo* in the Splatoon 2 photobooth. This event is insane! #tokyo #nintendoswitchevent pic.twitter.com/2QYcoOcgHR

In another hand, Splatoon 2 views on Nintendo japan has the most views, having passed 1 million views. This will be, no surprise, a bigger hit in Japan. |
I was wondering what views would be like from the Japanese side. :)

They shouldnt overshadow it though. The original was a big hit. If they came out and this game looked new and visually impressive. Like Mario did. People would be hyped but they appear to have put no effort into it. Very discouraging. I was not expecting this from Nintendo. |
It shouldn't be overshadowed, I agree, but it was going to happen either way. Mario and Zelda are two of Nintendo's biggest franchises. A new 3D Mario that is returning to the style of 64 and Sunshine, and a Zelda that is launching with the Switch and is one of the most hyped Nintendo games are no doubt going to be the main points of discussion. And it's not like there's no hype or excitement for the game, the trailer still has over a million views, is ranked 14 on the amazon best-sellers list for video games, and is outperforming every other trailer from the presentation on Nintendo of Japan's youtube channel
"I dont't see anybody hyped for spl2n!" - 2 days after announcement.
Also, Spla2n is meant to convince people to pay the online service, just like every other big online game.
Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

I guess between the fact that it was kinda expected, other game announcements and the paid online the hype is less noticeable but I am excited for it, love the new guns and specials.
