Forums - Nintendo - Switch screen quality is "amazing"

Speaking of Samsung, they just announced that the Galaxy 8 will be 4K.

Sounds like a bit of overkill in a smartphone, but if mobile VR really blows up I guess that's a nice screen for that use.

Additionally that should bring down prices for these screens, which is good for the general development of all VR headsets.

I never really saw how mobile VR could logistically blow up; it seems analogous to drones: great in your home and open controlled spaces and terrible in public spaces.

The 4K screens on mobile phones make me very concered about NS' prospects for longevity: people are going to buy the phones they need and then have to choose between a $10 4K game or a $300 sub-4K console without that game.

Even if that is the Switch's screen ppi it's right around or above tablets in the same price range!

Probably similar display quality to most tablets and smartphones, even some $100 - $200 models have amazing screens compared to the displays a few years earlier.

Not to mention that most of those devices don't come close to having the same controller tech out of the box for dedicated gaming.

So why do you mention that in a thread about the screen quality? Shall we also mention features of smartphones and tablets the Switch doesn't have?

But as I stated a screen can be 720p but have more ppi there are more factors into people just hearing 720p and saying that's garbage...

Yeah, there are more factors for the quality of a display... but you don't seem to know any besides resolution and pixel density, if you mention these interdependent factors again.

Display technology, color gamut, color accuracy, brightness, contrast ratio, spectrum, reflectance, viewing angle, power efficiency, sharpness, color depth, subpixel layout...

I wouldn't say it's amazing, but it's probably the right screen for the job. 720p on such a small screen and for the kind of performance the console pushes is quite enough.

not sure how many polygon based smartphone games would actually render natively in 4K, the 2D ones should be able to without any trouble though

the way I see it (especially going by the reveal trailer) is that Nintendo wants to capture an audience which might enjoy their latest iPhones and stuff, but isn't spec conscious and just enjoy the Nintendo fun factor in their traditional and party games without giving a thought to how pixelated it looks upon close inspection - we'll see how numerous and willing to buy-in that audience is pretty soon

I was referring more to the prospect of walking around a city, into traffic, while piloting your 4K, 3D spaceship. That probably doesn't end well lol.

I think they have to target that market, because it's the market they built the NS for. With the rise of mobile gaming, the diminishment of portable gaming, and the decreasing price of more powerful home consoles, I just wonder how big that market actually is anymore.

Was expecting some real tests with comparisons to other mobile screens or performance under daylight. Instead we got this useless 5mins of commentary

What kind of area do you live in? I see people with tablets just fine on trains.

Of course it matters by demographics. When I'm in the Philippines on a trip, I ain't playing that in the open. Kids try to snatch things out of your hands all the time. Depends on demographics.

Unless you've secured whatever device you're using, there is no reason to really go around use it in public transport.

I never use my 3DS in public, unless it's in some snobfest like UP Town Center or a uni classroom, then you might see me using it.

Also, using your phone in, say, the MRT, is relatively safe. Assuming, of course, that the MRT doesn't break down

Except 4K games of moderate complexity aren't viable even with stronger mobile processors than Switch.
PCs barely handle modern games at 4K, a smart phone isn't going to handle even moderately complex ones.
Nintendo cannot really hinge things on the simplest games, because that is already realm of smartphones.
Leveraging 4K also hinges on memory which would drive up costs and decrease battery life significantly.
That's why the Switch's 720p resolution doesn't matter, because it can't drive solid games higher than that.
It can only barely manage 1080p and sometimes not even that when docked in full power overclock mode.
They're better off with best 720p panel and APU they can manage, although the latter seems dubious.

Sure, simpler gamers might work at higher res, but it would mean upscaling for graphic showcase games.

I agree there's a trade-offs, but I question how much and how much it matters to the mainstream audience. Aside from consumers burned by the early abandonment of the WiiU (people like me), I expect most WiiU owners to buy the NS. As I mentioned earlier, NBA 2K17 and CoD on new smartphones look amazing for mobile games and cost $7 each. Most people don't think about their phone purchase as an option, but consoles are usually considered more of a luxury item. Hell, the iPhone 7 A10 processor outstrips the perfomance of any MacBook Air that preceded it. Since Apple runs on a 6 month schedule and has already significantly exceeded most of the necessary benchmarks for high end mobile gaming, the NS might start or fall behind rapidly.
